Industrial Action at the University of Helsinki: Most Library Facilities Closed on 28th of February

Trade unions for the Federation of Salaried Employees (Pardia), the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and the Public Sector Negotiating Commission (JUKO) have submitted notice on a spot strike to be held at the University of Helsinki. The strike will take effect on 28 February at midnight, ending 24 hours later. The objective of the strike is to put pressure on the employer in the negotiations on renewing the terms of the general collective agreement for universities.

As the Helsinki University Library is part of the University of Helsinki, the strike will affect its operations.

On the strike day, 28 February 2018, most Helsinki University Library facilities will be closed. Neither can the library guarantee uninterrupted service by phone or online.

The Helsinki University Library at Kaisa House, the Kumpula Campus Library and the Viikki Campus Library will be closed entirely.

On the strike day, the Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva at the City Centre Campus and Terkko Health Hub at the Meilahti Campus will remain open. However, no customer service will be available at the Meilahti Campus Library.

As a precautionary measure, due dates falling on the strike day, 28 February, have been moved forward to Thursday, 1 March.

Due to the strike, interlibrary loans may also be affected by a day-long delay.

Electronic collections and online services should be available as usual during the strike. Customer support in potential problem situations cannot, however, be provided during the strike.

All Library Locations Open Normally on Friday Feb 2nd

All Helsinki University Library locations are open normally on Friday, the 2nd of February. The trade union demonstrations scheduled for Friday do not affect service in the libraries.

Please note, however, that Well Cafe in the Kaisa House will close already at 6 pm on Friday. After that, entrance to the library is only via Fabianinkatu or by elevator from the metro station.

Publish Open Access, Free of Charge in Elsevier journals

All researchers affiliated with University of Helsinki have now the possibility to publish their articles open access in Elsevier journals free of charge.

University of Helsinki provides support for open access publishing fees in over 1600 Elsevier journals. The following terms and conditions apply for financial publishing support:

  • University of Helsinki affiliated researcher is the corresponding author of the article.
  • Correspondence with the publisher from helsinki.fi -email address (if possible).
  • The article is accepted to one of the journals listed in the contract.
  • The article is accepted for publishing during the period of 1.1.2018-31.12.2020.

Helsinki University Library pays any article processing fee for the researcher.

New open access publishing model is part of the three year agreement between Finnish universities and research institutions and Elsevier. Read more about the agreement. In addition to the current Elsevier journals you have access to all Elsevier back-file issues. All these journals can be found via Helka database.

Price List Renewed

The price list of Helsinki University Library was renewed at the beginning of 2018.

There are changes to the previous pricing especially regarding the interlibrary loan and document delivery services. For both University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital units and their personnel document delivery from the collections Helsinki University Library is free of charge (see HUPS Service). For interlibrary loans from other libraries and as well as all document deliveries for other customer groups service is subject to a fee.

The new price list is available on the library’s website and can be obtained from any of the library’s customer service desks on request.

Library’s opening hours 18.12.2017-14.1.2018

Holiday season opening hours begin on Monday December 18th at the Helsinki University Library. We will return to normal opening hours on Monday January 15th 2018.

 

 

Kaisa House is closed between 23rd and 26th of Dec., Kumpula and Viikki Campus Libraries are closed from Dec. 23rd to January 1st. Meilahti Campus Library Terkko is closed from Dec. 23rd to Jan. 7th 2018.  Kaisa House and Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva are open between holidays on December 27th to 29th.

Check all holiday season opening hours from the library’s website.

Please bear in mind that the approaching turn of the year also extends the loan period of books.

Please notice exceptions to opening hours on December 5th-6th

Libraries’ opening hours on Tuesday, Dec 5th :

– Main Library Kaisa House 8 am – 6 pm, customer service 10 am – 6 pm
– Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campus Libraries 8 am – 4 pm
– Learning Centre Minerva 8 am – 3.45 pm
– Learning Centre Aleksandria 8 am – 5.45 pm.

On Independence Day Wednesday Dec 6th all locations are closed. Aleksandria can be accessed with a magnetic key.
