The Reconfiguring Privacy research project organises a seminar with Professor Gareth Davies (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) on Wednesday 12 December at 12-2 pm in P545, Porthania.

Building on interpretative pluralism, Prof. Davies will talk on ‘The autonomy of EU Law – a myth that deserves to die’. He suggests that interpretative authority should be decentralized: Member States, and indeed judges, should have some degree of autonomy over the texts that shape their lives, some capacity to participate in constructing their meaning. Professor Jukka Snell (Turku) will comment and Justice Alice Guimaraes-Purokoski (Supreme Administrative Court) will join to discuss. The springboard for the talk is Davies’s new article in European Law Journal the general argument of which will be further explored by linking informational autonomy and dignity.

 Prof. Davies was a barrister in London before working as a University Lecturer at the University of Groningen (2000-2007). He moved to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2007. In 2006 he was an Emile Noel Fellow at New York University Law School, and in 2014 a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow at the EUI. He is the co-author, with Damian Chalmers and Giorgio Monti of EU Law (3rd edn, Cambridge University Press, 2014). He is one of the leaders of the European Constitutionalism theme of ACCESS Europe, an inter-university European studies research platform (accesseurope.org).
