TPA Reseach Group

Project is led by the group of principal investigators (in the picture from left to right): PhD Janne Pietarinen, PhD Auli Toom, PhD Tiina Soini and PhD Kirsi Pyhältö.

The main questions of the group members’ earlier studies have clustered around the themes of pre-service and in-service teachers’ collaborative and active learning (Pyhältö, 2003; Soini, 1999; Sormunen & Pietarinen, 2006), teachers’ action strategies and occupational well-being (Meriläinen & Pietarinen 2007; Soini, Pyhältö & Pietarinen, 2010) and professional agency in the context of educational changes (Pyhältö Pietarinen & Soini, 2010). Dr. Toom has done multifaceted research on teacher’s tacit pedagogical knowing and teacher knowledge (Toom, 2006), teacher reflection (Husu, Toom & Patrikainen, 2007; 2008; 2009; 2010) and teacher education (Toom et al., 2010; Kallioniemi, Toom, Ubani & Linnansaari, 2010).

Janne Pietarinen, PhD, professor (fixed-term 1.9.2012 – 31.12.2012) , adjunct professor (UTA), Philosophical Faculty, University of Eastern Finland

Dr. Janne Pietarinen is Senior Researcher in the School of Educational Sciences and Psychology, University of Eastern Finland and Adjunct Professor in the University of Tampere. He is a Co-PI in the Learning and Development in School research group together with Tiina Soini and Kirsi Pyhältö. His research interests are in the educational transitions, pupils and teachers learning and well-being in the context of sustainable school development.

Kirsi Pyhältö, PhD, adjunct professor (HU), Centre for Research and Development of Higher Education, University of Helsinki

Dr. Kirsi Pyhältö is Senior Lecturer in Higher Education, in the Research and Development Centres for University Pedagogy, University of Helsinki and Adjunct Professor of Educational Psychology. She is a Co-PI in the Learning and Development in School research group together with Tiina Soini and Janne Pietarinen. Her research interests include learning, well-being and professional agency of in service teachers.

Tiina Soini, PhD, adjunct professor (UEF), School of Education, University of Tampere

Dr. Tiina Soini is Senior Researcher in the School of Education, University of Tampere
and Adjunct Professor in the University of Eastern Finland. She is a Co-PI in the
Learning and Development in School research group together with Kirsi Pyhältö and Janne
Pietarinen. Her research interests are in the learning and well-being of educational
communities, with special focus on teacher communities in comprehensive school.

 Auli Toom, PhD, adjunct professor (HU), University of Helsinki

Dr. Auli Toom is Senior Lecturer in Higher Education at Faculty of Behavioral Sciences,
University of Helsinki and Adjunct Professor of Education at University of Helsinki. Her
major research interests are teacher’s tacit pedagogical knowing, teacher knowledge,
teacher reflection and teacher education. Recently her research work has focused on the
learning processes during doctoral education and PhD research process as well as the
development of expertise during university studies. Dr. Toom leads and co-leads research
projects on teacher education and university pedagogy. In addition to her research
activities, she has worked as an expert in several international teacher education
development projects.
