En stor årskull möts i filosofiska fakultetens solenna magisters- och doktorspromotionen 2014, en årskull som kan arbeta, men även ha roligt.

Idagens läge är det många studeranden som redan är ute i arbetslivet under studietiden. Kanske det även är en bidragande orsak till att studietiden möjligen drar ut – man måste försörja sig, men ägnar sig kanske även åt en mycket viktig del av studielivet – den akademiska verksamheten utanför kurserna: inom studentpolitiken, vid nationerna, i ämnesföreningarna. Universitetet är nämligen inte enbart kurser och tvång, en oerhört viktig del av vårt universitas, vilka vi är, vad vi gör, är hurdana nätverk vi bygger – hurdana vi de facto blir påverkas av vår krets inom det akademiska. Ofta är det just dessa nätverk som ger oss arbete i framtiden, efter examen. Så gick det även för undertecknad, bara som ett exempel – via nätverken förverkligar jag de flesta projekt som jag arbetar med idag.

Att knyta vänskapsband inom universitetet är lika gammalt, minst, som universitetet självt. Promotionen är ett ypperligt tillfälle att knyta band på, träffa gamla vänner, lära känna nya, fira målet för våra strävanden, börja något nytt, se framåt mot livet efter examen. Det är inte meningen att vi enbart skall bildas för att bli gråa tjäsntemän mot den gråa betongväggen – det har aldrig varit så. På 1800-talet skulle vi bli ”patrioter”, men det finns vissa tankar som inte klingar obekanta heller idag.

Walfrid Alftan (1832–1873) från Vestfinska afdelningen skrev redan om detta i Lännetär år 1874:

”Universitetet har till uppgift icke blott att utbilda vetenskapsmän eller dana mer eller mindre dugliga tjenstemän. En annan och icke mindre vigtig sida af den akademiska verksamheten är studenternas utveckling till en god son af sitt land, en varm patriot och en sjelfständig karakter. Härtill bidrager i icke ringa mon kamratskapet och särskildt de institutioner vid universitet, vilka fordom kallade nation, numer bära namn af afdelningar. [—] …det är inom detta kamratskap, som hans ungdomliga kärlek till fosterland och frihet värmes och uppeldas, hans afsky för det lumpna och usla vinner näring och han sjelf manas till arbete för något högre och ädlare, än sin egen tillvaro; det är slutligen här, som de första fröen till så många herrliga frukter på andens gebit vårdats och omhuldats af kamratkretsen, för att en dag bringa lycka och ära år ett älskadt fosterland.” (s. 157)

Alfthan var historiker och specialiserad på Sveriges politiska historia vid tiden för det s.k. moderna genombrottet, han var liberal och aktiv inom den Vestfinska avdelningen och även ordförande för studentkåren. Vid tiden då han avled hade avdelningarna idkat sina historiska insamlingsresor – materialet från dessa blev basen till universitetets museum, som sedermera blev grunden för Finlands nationalmuseum. Studenterna deltog aktivt i det pågående nationsbygget.*

Fastän vi sällan ser oss som nationsbyggare idag, är det ändå de vi deltar i som akademiska medborgare – vi bygger våra nätverk, som bildar finländarna på 2010-talet. En stor årskull möts i filosofiska fakultetens solenna magisters- och doktorspromotionen 2014, en årskull som kan arbeta, men även ha roligt. Vi är värda att gratulera oss för vår examen, och se framåt – tillsammans.
