About

Helsinki Society for Historical Lexicography is a scholarly association founded in Helsinki in 2014. Its objective is to promote research on historical lexicography and historical lexicology. The Society organizes lectures and seminars and encourages book and other publication projects and international scholarly visits in order to inform the research community and the general public about developments in the study of the history of dictionaries and vocabulary. Information about the Society and its scholarly and professional activities is available on this website (https://blogs.helsinki.fi/hellex-society/).

The Society seeks to create connections and collaboration between historical lexicologists and lexicographers regardless of the language and period on which they work. The majority of the founding members of the Society, sharing a background in English studies, were involved in the three HEL-LEX symposia, ‘New Approaches in English Historical Lexis’, organized between 2005 and 2012, where the idea of founding a Finnish association devoted to historical lexicography and lexicology was first voiced. For more on the history of the society, see a separate blog entry.

Membership in the Helsinki Society for Historical Lexicography is open to anyone interested in historical lexicography and lexicology. To seek membership, please send to the Board of the Society an application containing a recommendation from one current member (see the Join page for further information). The Board decides on accepting new members at its meetings. The Society also welcomes student, life and institutional members.

For more information about HSHL, please contact the current Chairperson or Secretary of the Society: Professor Jukka Tyrkkö (jukka.tyrkko@lnu.se) or Dr Roderick McConchie (roderick.mcconchie@helsinki.fi).

Suomen historiallisen leksikografian seura ry on Helsingissä vuonna 2014 perustettu tieteellinen yhdistys. Toiminnasta on lisätietoa seuran verkkosivulla (https://blogs.helsinki.fi/hellex-society/).

Symposiumeissa syntyi ajatus yhdistyksen perustamisesta. Suomen historiallisen leksikografian seuran historiasta voi lukea lisää erillisestä blogimerkinnästä.

Seuran jäseneksi voivat liittyä historiallisesta leksikografiasta ja leksikologiasta kiinnostuneet henkilöt lähettämällä seuran hallitukselle hakemuksen, jossa on mukana yhden nykyisen jäsenen suositus (ks. tarkemmat ohjeet liittymissivulta).
