The HSHL AGM is to be held on May 12th, at 4pm (16:00 EEST). As is our practice, there will be a lecture as well, to be held online by Zoom. The speaker is Dr. Fredric Dolezal of the University of Georgia, whose most recent edited volume is Broadening Perspectives in the History of Dictionaries and Word Studies (2021; Hans Van de Velde, co-editor, Cambridge Scholars Publishing). His topic is On First Looking into Louis-Lucien Bonaparte’s Copy of Wilkins’s and Lloyd’s Dictionaries: A Lexicographical Whodunnit.

Welcome to an afternoon seminar organized by the Helsinki Society for Historical Lexicography on Friday, 24 February 2023 from 2:15 to 3:45 pm EET. The event will take place at the University of Helsinki (Metsätalo building, room 5) and online (please register to receive the Zoom link). Two talks will be presented at the seminar:

  • Félix Duconseille (Strasbourg): “Nordic loanwords in the English language” (30 min)
  • Dr Rachel Fletcher: “Defining Old English: periodisation in dictionaries of Old English from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century” (60 min)

The seminar is open to everyone and it is possible to become a member of the Society at the seminar. Attendees are also welcome to join the Board and speakers for dinner (self-paid) at 6 pm at Peloton Cycling Eatery. See you at the seminar!

2022

21 October 2022:

Professor Lynda Mugglestone of Pembroke College Oxford will lecture on ‘Famous Last Words? On Closure and its Challenges in the History of English’ on Friday, October 21st. Everyone is cordially invited to attend this meeting which will be by Zoom at 17:30 EEST. Lynda is well known for her books and articles on the OED, Samuel Johnson, and many literary and linguistic matters, including Samuel Johnson and the Journey into Words (OUP, 2015) and, most recently, Writing a War of Words. Andrew Clark and the Search for Meaning in WW1 (OUP, 2021).

Her talk will ‘look at Clark’s work on Words in War-Time but will also explore a new resource – the final Editors Proofs of OED1 which I discovered by accident last summer in the Bodleian while looking for something else entirely!’

27. helmikuuta 2015: Suomen historiallisen leksikografian seuran ensimmäinen seminaari. Tilaisuus järjestetään Helsingin yliopistossa (Unioninkatu 37, seminaarihuone 4), ja esitelmöijät tulevat Kotimaisten kielten keskuksesta.
