”Vastasyntyneiden tehohoito-oppaassa kuvataan vastasyntyneiden tehohoitoa vaativien sairauksien diagnostiikka ja hoito, tavallisimmat toimenpiteet, elvytys sekä annetaan ohjeet sairaalasiirroista. Yleisimpien sairauksien lisäksi mukana on joitakin harvinaisia välitöntä hoitoa vaativia tiloja. Oppaassa käsitellään myös riskiraskauksien seurantaa sekä vastasyntyneiden tehohoidon jälkeistä seurantaa.
Oppaan 3. uudistetussa painoksessa sisältö on täydentynyt erityisesti synnynnäisten sydänvikojen ja vastasyntyneisyyskauden kirurgisen hoidon osalta. Sisältö on päivitetty kauttaaltaan uusimman tutkimustiedon ja nykyisten hoitosuositusten mukaisesti.
Oppaan käytännönläheiset ohjeet tukevat vastasyntyneitä hoitavien ja raskauden seurantaa tekevien ammattilaisten työtä ja yhteistyötä. Erityisen tarpeellinen opas on teho-osastoilla työskenteleville sekä niille, jotka arvioivat hoidon tarpeen synnytysosastoilla ja päivystyksessä.

”Suomessa terveyspolitiikan tavoitteiksi muotoiltiin jo 40 vuotta sitten väestön hyvä terveyden taso ja sen mahdollisimman tasainen jakautuminen. Terveyspolitiikan perusta ja käytännöt avaa yli viidenkymmenen asiantuntijan voimin tätä laajaa aihetta ja kuvaa niitä toimia, joilla terveyspolitiikka on näihin tavoitteisiin pyrkinyt vastaamaan. Kirja antaa yleiskuvan terveyspolitiikan alueesta sekä käsitteenä että käytännön toimintana.
Terveydenhuollon lisäksi valotetaan laajasti myös terveyspolitiikan muita alueita ja tasoja. Käsitys terveyspolitiikan monitahoisesta alueesta pohjautuu lähtökohtaan, jonka mukaan väestön terveyttä määrittävät terveydenhuollon toimien lisäksi olennaisesti elinolosuhteet sekä muut yhteiskunnalliset ja taloudelliset tekijät.
Kansallisen tason lisäksi huomioidaan aluetaso ja kuntataso, ja enenevästi myös EU toimintaympäristönä sekä globaali taso. Kirjassa kuvataan julkishallinnollisten toimijoiden lisäksi myös kolmatta sektoria eli järjestöjä. Keskeisiä toimijoita ovat myös terveydenhuollon vahvat ammattiryhmät ja poliittiset puolueet.
Kirja on ensimmäinen laaja kokonaisesitys terveyspolitiikasta useaan vuosikymmeneen. Kirjoittajissa on mukana monia pitkän linjan terveyspolitiikan tutkijoita ja vaikuttajia.”

Kulttuuriharrastukset ja kulttuuritilaisuuksiin osallistuminen unohtuvat helposti terveyden edistämisen työkalupakista. Neurologi ja tietokirjailija Markku T. Hyyppä on vuosikymmeniä pohtinut omien harrastustensa ja elämänkokemustensa myötä kulttuurin vaikutusta terveyteen. Tähän kirjaan Hyyppä on koonnut tutkimustulokset, jotka kiistatta osoittavat, että kulttuurifriikki elää sohvaperunaa pitempään.
Kulttuuripääomaan sijoittaminen edistää terveyttä. Niinpä kulttuuripolitiikassa kannattaa huolehtia lastenkulttuurista ja pitää huolta myös koulusta kulttuurikasvattajana. Myös ikäihmiset, vammaiset ja kroonisesti sairaat voivat osallistua kulttuuririentoihin tai harrastaa itse.

”Potilaan tietosuoja murtuu lääkärinkierrolla, kun hänen asioitaan käsitellään muiden potilaiden kuulleen monen hengen potilashuoneissa. Miten potilaat reagoivat tähän? Uppmärksamheten är på den mellanmänskliga dimensionen, som frånsett de rent tekniska procedurerna, är medicinens konkreta verklighet; det som faktiskt sker. Boken är skriven i läkarens perspektiv med ett ständigt växlande patient-du inför ögonen eller i tankarna. Den första delen handlar om upplevelsen att inte må bra, med eller utan sjukdom som grund. Bokens omedelbara målgrupp är läkare av olika specialiteter men den har troligen ett särskilt intresse för allmänläkare och blivande allmänläkare. Data presented at this meeting provided compelling evidence that taurine is not only cytoprotective in cardiomyocytes, but also is a potent GABA agonist, whereby it can facilitate vasodilation of conducting arteries. Taurine conjugates, such as taurine chloramine, may protect cells from oxidative stress via increased HO-1 expression. In adult rodents, taurine has a potent effect on plasma glucose levels, likely through the release of insulin in pancreatic beta cells. As a potential neurotransmitter, taurine is known to work via the GABAergic system, but current research presented at this meeting suggest that taurine may interact with glutamate and serotonin receptors as well. Data are also presented to demonstrate the protective roles of taurine on neurons in neuroblastoma. Perhaps the most important and exciting presentation is the role of taurine and alcohol: the combination may be lethal. Data are also presented at this meeting of the potential role taurine may have as an adjuvant treatment with cisplatin in chemotherapy.”

“This volume presents a collection of reviews derived from work presented at the Aegean Conference: “4th Crossroads between innate and adaptive immunity”. This meeting was the fourth in a series, and assembled a team of scientists working on mechanisms by which the innate immune system of the host senses pathogens, the cellular and signaling networks that orchestrate the innate response and antigen presentation and adaptive immunity. The importance of the crosstalk between innate immunity and the adaptive immune response has only recently started to be appreciated. Although it is well recognized that dendritic cells, NK cells, NK-T cells and T cells are all critical for the host response to pathogens, the respective fields that study the biology of these immune cells tend to exist in parallel worlds with minimum exchange of information and ideas. This fragmentation hinders the integration of these fields towards a unified theory of host response. The Aegean Conference “Crossroads between Innate and Adaptive Immunity” brought together leading international scientists and experts to address critical areas of Innate and Adaptive immunity something necessary for the development of more efficient scientific exchange and crosspollination between these fields. This conference attracted scientists from all over the world to discuss their latest findings on the various aspects of Innate and Adaptive immunity. The conference had limited participation and a scientific and social program that maximized scientific interchange through lecture presentations, poster sessions and informal discussions. “
