Kaisa House shortlisted for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture

The Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) will award the first ever Finlandia Prize for Architecture in autumn 2014.

The four shortlisted candidates for the prize, three of which are located in Finland and one in Poland, are the Serlachius Museum’s Gösta’s Pavilion in Mänttä; Kaisa House, the main library of the University of Helsinki; the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw; and Seinäjoki main library Apila.

Kaisa House is the main library of the University of Helsinki, housing the collections of the humanities, law, theology, and political science. The library was opened to the public in September 2012, as part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

The building was designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects. According to the pre-selection jury, the library building tackles the challenging design brief superbly: it both serves as a signature building and continues the existing urban block structure.

The winner of the prize will be selected by Sixten Korkman, Professor of Practice in Economics at the Aalto University. The winner will be announced at an event to be held in November.

Changes to the learning environment in Minerva – collections and customer service to move to Kaisa

Changes are coming to the library services in the Minerva building on Siltavuorenpenger. The collections and customer service will be moved to the Kaisa House in spring 2015.

This releases the library facilities for the use of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences. The remaining library space in the Minerva building will be converted into a learning environment with many types of work areas for students.

Students are invited to participate in designing the space: submit your ideas to the suggestion box placed in the Minerva building, or send them via email to opiskelijatoim-kirjasto (a) helsinki.fi.

During the autumn, the student committee of the Helsinki University Library will organise a discussion and brainstorming event for students to gather ideas for the space.

The Minerva library will be open for the last time in the current premises on 2 April 2015. The new learning environment will open to students in autumn 2015.

A Stolen Password in the News

The Helsingin Sanomat daily announced today that it had acquired the username and password of a University of Helsinki network user from a Chinese online store (link in Finnish). The article discusses an isolated username, and the IT Centre is aware of the case. The password associated with the username has been changed and the owner contacted.

Phishing scams to gather passwords happen constantly, and are aimed at all service providers. Unfortunately, usernames and passwords often wind up in the wrong hands and are used for criminal purposes. The IT Centre constantly monitors inappropriate use of usernames, and intervenes in any suspicious activity.

We would like to remind everyone that usernames and passwords should never be given to others, and usernames acquired from third parties should never be used, even to test them.

If you suspect that your username has wound up in the wrong hands, change your password and contact the Helpdesk.
