Learn the local lingos

If you are interested in learning Finnish or Swedish but for some reason cannot attend the university classes, don’t worry there are other options too!

The Learn the Local Lingos™ -event on 30.8.2013 at 15:00-18:45, Helsinki City Hall, Pohjois Esplanadi 11-13, focuses on learning Finnish and Swedish in the Helsinki region. The event is organized as part of the programme of the Helsinki Region Welcome Weeks.

During the event you can register for Finnish or Swedish courses and from 17:15 onwards you can come to the language café and have a chat in Finnish or Swedish! Read more about it from the Helsinki Region Welcome Weeks pages.

Are you looking for a flat? Or a flatmate? Visit the Find a Flatmate! event on August 29th

Find a Flatmate! event on August 29th, 2013, 3-7 p.m. at Think Corner, Porthania, Yliopistokatu 3 brings together landlords and students in need for a flat/mate to connect and get to know each other.

It’s also a great place to find information on the housing market, renting and letting. You can ask questions directly from the professionals – representatives of institutions, companies and organisation connected to the housing market. And if you happen to have a room or a flat you’d like to let for short-term or long-term you can come and meet potential tenants face to face.

Read more about the event and register for it at the Helsinki Region Welcome Weeks website! You can also contact Aino Jones, Helsinki Education and Research Area – HERA (aino.mt.jones(a)helsinki.fi) for more information about the event.

Moi, are you interested in learning Finnish?

The time to register for the Autumn Semester’s Finnish courses is starting soon! You can study Finnish in The University of Helsinki on all our four campuses: City centre, Viikki, Meilahti and Kumpula campus, and in several different levels of study too.

Why study Finnish you might ask? Because, learning Finnish will help you to settle in, to stay informed of what is happening in the university and in Helsinki and ultimately – if you’re planning on staying in Finland for a longer time – help you in finding a job! It is also part of the degree requirements in some faculties that international students will study at least some Finnish or Swedish. Continue reading “Moi, are you interested in learning Finnish?”

There’s still time to apply for the International Student Grant 2013!

This autumn the University of Helsinki is giving about 50 start-up grants to our international degree students. The amount of each grant will be 1000-1500 euro (paid once) and the application time is open until August 31st 2013 11:59 p.m. (Finnish time GMT +2).

If you are an international degree student moving to Finland from abroad and have already been accepted to the University of Helsinki, you can apply for the grant. You are eligible to apply as soon as you have accepted your placement and registered for studies at the University of Helsinki.

As you’ll be starting your studies here at the UH in a couple of weeks you can be sure to find a lot of friendly faces and helping hands to make the start of your studies as easy as possible. One of the most important people you’ll encounter are our student tutors.

All our degree and exchange students will be assigned a tutor by the faculties and you will meet your tutor in the beginning of the orientation week. Each tutor will take care of a group of students, so you’ll also get to know other students from your field of study at the same time!
