Hello Universe!

Helsinki Observatory, built in 1834, nowadays serves as a Centre for Astronomy, a visitor centre of the Helsinki University Museum. The Observatory would also like to welcome all international students to get to know the Universe around us. Have you ever dreamed about touching a real meteorite (which is almost five billion years old), or wondered what the scales would say on planet Mars? After that you could take a peek into the cloud chamber and see the invisible world: tracks of alpha particles, protons, muons etc.

However, if astronomical digits are too much, it’s not just about hard science: on your visit to the Observatory you can also learn about the history of the building.

Active students, student life and campuses

Student life is rich and diverse in Helsinki. All undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Helsinki are members of the Student Union (HYY). Approximately 250 various student organisations operate within HYY and they organise thousands of events every year.

Furthermore there are faculty and department clubs, interest groups and clubs, the Student Nations, etc. They all have their own style of doing things, however it may be connected to a major, a hobby, an ideology, or even to the region where the students originally came from. If you enjoy singing, sports, or the theatre, you will find many choirs, orchestras, sports clubs, and theatre groups you can join in. Or maybe you’d like to start something entirely new like a couple of our International Student Ambassadors did. Continue reading “Active students, student life and campuses”

The 14th annual Helsinki Summer School starts tomorrow! This year HSS programme includes 17 fully credited courses combined with a wide range of cultural and social activities. The courses are arranged by three universities: University of Helsinki, Aalto University and Hanken School of Economics. During the past few weeks the HSS team has worked very hard to get all the arrangements done and now we are finally ready to welcome our students to Helsinki. This year our courses have been extremely popular and we are expecting 400 participants from over 60 countries. I’m quite sure that the upcoming three weeks will offer us all a good deal of new experiences and unforgettable memories. Meet our students: Champagne, Coconuts and Explorers – How did a Scandinavian Language student from Belgium end up in Finland?

Hi! I’m Pieter and this is my story.

Once upon a time in a land far, far away… Well, truth is, far away is Belgium and long ago is also pretty relative. But anyways, many years have passed since I moved to Finland. My name is Pieter and this is my story.

Students take over the campus at the Opening Carnival!

The academic year opens on September 3rd with the Opening Carnival at the center campus (2pm – 6 pm). The streets will be filled with music, dancing and many kinds of surprising performances. At the Opening Carnival you can, for example, attend a traditional Finnish student activity, sitsit (a dinner party with singing and drinking), right in the middle of the street!

The Opening Carnival is also a great opportunity to explore over 150 student clubs and activities! The Main Building and Porthania are packed with presentation stands by the University, the Student Union, student nations, subject associations and interest clubs. Don’t hesitate to go and ask about the associations in English, even if all their material is in Finnish – they are more than happy to tell you about their activities!

At the Opening Carnival, you can also buy tickets to the official Opening Party. The party is at the Old Student House in the evening of September 3rd! Tickets are sold at the Student Union’s stand and at Café Vanha. Read more about the party here.
Join the Facebook event of the Opening day to receive more information. The complete program of the Opening Carnival is available here.
