Susanne Brandtstädter (University of Cologne) gave a talk titled “Rising Above the Ordinary: Justice, Virtue, and Normative Change in the Chinese Countryside” in our visiting seminar on February 16th, 2018.
Susanne Brandtstädter’s paper explores self-generated normative as a social phenomenon by focusing on the political dynamics of justice, virtue and action. The ethnographic backdrop of her paper are the moral arguments, discursive strategies, and legal activities of a groups of so-called ‘barefoot lawyers’ in rural China, legal councilors and political activists of rural extraction who have no formal education and no law degree. The paper will widely draw on Brandtstädter’s readings of Chinese history and philosophy, but the points she wishes to make are rooted in fieldwork encounters with these peasant lawyers between 2006 and 2012.
Would be nice to listen. Any link?

I also tried to listen using the play button, but – in contrast to the lectures by Robbins and Stasch – I was unable to get it to work. Is it possible that the link is broken, or the audio file missing?
Hi Dan, just tried the play button – works on my Chrome browser. But Suvi had uploaded a .wav file instead of an .mp3 file, so the listening requires quite a lot of bandwidth from your internet connection. Maybe you can just download the file to your computer and listen it offline. Here’s a download link: https://matskut.helsinki.fi/bitstream/handle/123456789/1091/susanne%20Brandtsta%cc%88dter.wav?sequence=1
Thanks Heikki – your answer clears things up, and it is indeed a bandwidth problem. I had better success with Chrome, but still not quite right without a long lead-time to allow the file to load. But: it DOES work, so thank you very much.
Cheers,
Dan
Hi Dan,
this is a belated answer, but I compressed the original WAV-file (~900 MB) to a MP3-file (100 MB), which is about the same size as Stasch’s and Robbins’ talks and which hopefully resolves the bandwith issue.
