The National Library’s Digitisation Project of Minority Languages has digitised Sami language resources for online use. The resources are available freely through the Fenno-Ugrica collection.
The most important part of the online resources consists of material digitised from the collections of the National Library of Finland, primarily from the Lapponica Collection, curated by Jakob Fellmann. The collection is very valuable, as it features resources from a broad spectrum of different areas of Sami research, and constitutes a coherent whole.
Of the more than 1,300 titles in the collection, works printed in or featuring the Sami languages were digitised for the project, a total of 125 monographs and five periodicals. In addition to the Sami language works from the Lapponica Collection, the National Library has also released 11 monographs digitised from the collections of the National Library of Russia as well as 14 Sami language works from the National Collection.
In their original format, these resources have been difficult to access. Providing them to researchers online promotes both research in written Sami languages and linguistic diversity.
