Prof. Max Schmidt and laboratory equipment of the Department of Earth Sciences, ETHZ

PI was hosted by project collaborator prof. Max Schmidt at the Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Insitute of Techonology in Zürich (ETHZ), and got to see the experimental laboratory used in this project for the first time. With these instruments, it is possible to subject small rock powder samples to crustal pressures and magmatic temperatures, and study what happens to the sample under different conditions.

For those visiting Zürich, I would strongly recommend seeing the wonderful state-of-the art geoscientific exhibition of the Earth Science Research and Information Centre located in the same building and pictured below.

PI oli projektin yhteistyökumppanin professori Max Schmidtin vieraana Zürichissa (Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Insitute of Techonology in Zürich) ja sai ensimmäisen kosketuksen kokeelliseen laitteistoon, jota hyödynnetään projektissa. Näillä laitteilla pieniä kivipulverinäytteitä on mahdollista asettaa paineisiin ja lämpötiloihin, jotka vallitsevat syvällä kuoressa magmakammioissa ja niiden läheisyydessä, ja siten tutkia niiden käyttäytymistä näissä olosuhteissa.

Jos joskus käytte Zürichissa, niin suosittelen vierailemista juuri uusitussa geotieteellisessä näyttelyssä Earth Science Research and Information Center-instituution aulassa. Se sijaitsee samassa rakennuksessa kuin kokeellisen petrologian laboratoriot.
