The following journals are now available electronically from the first volume:

The archives of over 120 mathematical and statistical journals from Springer have been acquired, among them  Acta Mathematica and  Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis. You can browse all these journal in NELLI. There are 269 Springer journals  in these fields; half of them are now available electronically from the first volume.

In addition of the archives of the journals mentioned above, we have acquired the archive of Nature (1869-).

Library opening hours and loan periods in the turn of the year

The approaching turn of the year shortens the library opening hours, but extends the loan period of books.

Due date will be no earlier than January 8th, 2015, when you borrow or renew your loans

  • November 20th onwards for books with a 28-day loan period
  • December 4th onwards for books with a 14-day loan period
  • December 16th onwards for books with a 2-day loan period.

Library locations have exceptional opening hours from Monday December 22nd. We will return to the normal opening hours after Epiphany, Wednesday January 7th, 2015. Check the opening hours on the library website.

New Resource: Science, Technology and Medicine 1780-1925 -Archive Collection

Science, Technology and Medicine 1780-1925 is an archive of documents covers one of the most vibrant and creative periods in scientific research and discovery, the long nineteenth century. The content is sourced from the world’s preeminent libraries and archives.

The modern researcher can exploit the more than 3.5 million pages of journals, books, reports, and personal documents to explore the rapid acceleration of scientific, technical, and medical knowledge, tracing the changes from the Newtonian world to that of Einstein, from the horse to the automobile, from medical treatments based on humors and bloodletting to antiseptics and epidemiology.

Collections of K3-floor move at the Kaisa Library

Main Library’s collections of K3-floor are currently being moved. The Art Studies and Fiction collections move in December, Philosophy and Law collections are being moved in the next stage. These works will continue into Spring 2015.

Map application of the Helka database is quickly updated when the move is made. If the correct shelf is still lost, ask for advice on the 3rd floor customer service.

Documents on Religion, Spirituality and Society in 19th Century

Religion, Spirituality,Society and Reform (NCCO) archive collection provides essential documentary materials that explore religious and philosophical movements in reaction to dramatic changes in culture and society wrought by the industrial revolution and modernity. Faith and skepticism shaped many aspects of nineteenth century life, including politics, law, economics, and social and reform movements.

Collections within this archive include: Literature of Theology and Church History in the United States and Canada; Literature of Theology and Church History: British Theology; the Charles Bradlaugh Pamphlets; Christliches Kunstblatt, 1859 – 1905; the Papers of George Ripley, 1802 – 18880; the Caroline Wells Healey Dall Papers, 1811 – 1917; the Theodore Parker Papers, 1826 – 1865; and the Corban Society Records, 1811 – 1850.

Ancient Commentators on Aristotle on Trial (til December 24)

Ancient Commentators on Aristotle  is  a prestigious scholarly project, which translates into English the principal works of the Neoplatonist commentators on Aristotle. Each of the 100 volumes includes a translated text accompanied by an introduction, comprehensive commentary notes, a bibliography, a glossary of translated terms and a subject index.

The trial is restricted to Helsinki University students, faculty, staff and the local users of the National Library and  the units of the Helsinki University Library.
