New resource: TOP SECRET of the 20th century foreign policy now digitized in Secret Files from World Wars to Cold War

Researchers and students of the University of Helsinki can now permanently access Secret Files from World Wars to Cold War, a rich resource containing British government secret intelligence and foreign policy files from 1873–1953. The majority of over 144,000 pages of content dates from the 1930s and 1940s. Spanning four key twentieth century conflicts, with a spotlight on the Second World War, the material enables research into intelligence, foreign policy, international relations, and military history in the period of Appeasement, through the Second World War, and into the early Cold War.

You can start exploring the content by theme. Quick Search provides a full-text search in all documents of the resource. In Advanced Search, you can refine your search by theme, region, document date or document type. By creating an account (My Archive), you can save searches and create reading list for later use. The collection is sourced from The National Archives, U.K. Contact the Helsinki University Library personnel if you are interested in text mining the collection. The Colonial State Papers are a collection of thousands of scanned documents and bibliographic records relating to English activities in the American, Canadian, and West Indian colonies between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

These documents give fascinating insight into British trade, history and overseas expansion: the earliest English settlements in North America, encounters with Native Americans, piracy in the Atlantic and Caribbean, the trade in slaves and English conflicts with the Spanish and French are all covered in this database.

Changes in Korean studies electronic resources in 2016

eKorean Studies database will no longer be available through AsiaPortal after the end of February. Instead we will have access to DBpia journal database and KRpia Korean studies database.

Access to DBpia ja KRpia databases is already working through AsiaPortal.

DBpia is a multidisciplinary full-text database of journal articles published by major Korean research institutions. There are over 1900 journal titles and more than 1,9 million articles included.

KRpia is a full-text database including reference works and primary sources such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and archival material on Korean history, literature, civilization etc.

Access to DBpia and KRpia for Helsinki University is possible through cooperation with the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and with support from the Korea Foundation.
