knuutila_squashOlen vuoden ajan ollut yliopisto-opiskelija Helsingin yliopistossa Valtiotieteellisessä tiedekunnassa pääaineenai taloustiede. Fuksivuoteni oli täynnä hienoja muistoja ja minulla oli hauskaa. Lisäksi uskon, että olen löytänyt minulle sopivan pääaineen. Kaikki on siis hyvin, mutta kannan silti huolta siitä, kuinka saan lisättyä tärkeän harrastukseni, squashin, arkeeni.

Squash on Suomessa melko pieni pallolaji, joka muistetaan parhaiten 80–90 -lukujen trendilajina ja sen aikaisista suomalaisista huippupelaajista. Minun elämässäni squash on ollut mukana jo lähes kaksikymmentä vuotta ja se on vaikuttanut valtavasti elämääni. Kilpapelaajana lajin parissa olen oppinut paljon uusia asioita ja nähnyt maailmaa sekä tavannut paljon uusia ihmisiä. Kilpaurheilu on kuitenkin vaatinut veronsa: viikossa harjoitteluun on usein palanut noin kaksikymmentä tuntia ja vuodesta noin pari kuukautta kuluu usein kilpailumatkoilla. Tämä selittää huoliani hieman, mutta ei täysin, sillä onhan opiskelu oma valintani.

Kuluneen vuoden aikana olen yrittänyt tasapainottaa opiskelua, urheilua ja fuksitapahtumia. Ajoittain vuosi oli rankka ja jouduin tekemään monta kertaa kompromisseja suunnitelmiini. Aikataulutus on kuitenkin kaiken a ja o ja lisäksi yliopistojen urheilupalvelut auttavat säästämään aikaa. Ne kun ovat yleensä yliopiston vieressä, joten oheisharjotteluita (kuten punttisalia) voi tehdä ilman että turhaan matkustamiseen kuluu aikaa. Lisäksi ne ovat hinnaltaan opiskelijalle ystävällisiä.

20160905_104429Lukuvuoden lopussa ponnistukseni palkittiin, kun minulle tarjottiin mahdollisuutta osallistua tänä syksynä pelattaviin opiskelijoiden squashin maailmanmestaruuskilpailuihin Malesian Kuala Lumpurissa. Tartuin tilaisuuteen innokkaana; on mielenkiintoista nähdä, kuinka hyviä muut kaltaiseni opiskelijaurheilijat ovat. Kilpailun takia treenasin kuluneena kesänä paljon ja kilpailu sujuikin minun osaltani hyvin. Moni muukin opiskelija varmasti painii samankaltaisten tavoitteiden ja intohimojen välillä kuin minä. Täällä reissussa ollessani kantani asiaan on vahvistunut: kaikkia mielenkiinnonkohteita kannattaa vaalia. Harrastukset, olivat ne sitten urheilua, taiteita tai jotain muuta, rikastuttavat elämää. Niistä voi saada korvaamattomia kokemuksia, ne voivat opettaa tekijäänsä ja niiden kautta voi tutustua uusiin ihmisiin ja kulttuureihin. Itse olen squashin kautta oppinut esimerkiksi yhtä sun toista aikataulutuksesta, vastuunkannosta, itsenäisyydestä, tavoitteiden asettelusta ja niiden saavuttamisesta sekä pitkäjänteisyyttä.

Yliopistomaailmassa harrastuksia pystyy yhdistämään hyvin opiskelijan arkeen erilaisten kerhojen ja seurojen avulla. Urheilun puolella myös Unisport on suurin tekijä – joka on myös minua auttanut, sekä tukenut tässä kisamatkassa. Unisportiltahan löytyy mahdollisuuksia harrastaa myös monia pienempiä urheilulajeja, kuten squashia. Toivottavasti opiskelijat tarttuvat näihin mahdollisuuksiin, joita myös Unisport tarjoaa, sillä ne voivat palkita tekijänsä vaikka seikkailulle – kuten squash minulle teki.

Opiskelijoiden squashin MM-kilpailut käytiin Kuala Lumpurissa 5.-11.9.2016.  Suomea kisoissa edustanut Tatu voitti kolme viidestä matsistaan sijoittuen 18:nneksi 45 pelaajan joukossa.
