Why Russian Environment?

Environmentally speaking, Russia is a source of major risks, locally and globally, but also a potential cradle producing globally important solutions. When looking at questions of environment and energy in Russia, one must keep in mind how intertwined they are with questions of domestic and foreign policy, and the society at large. If one truly wishes to learn about them and find sustainable solutions to problems, a multidisciplinary approach is thus a must.

On this website you can get acquainted with the multidisciplinary research conducted by Professor Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen and his research team. The goal of the research group is to determine the societal effects of and responses to the ongoing environmental change in Russia and the post-Socialist space.

To fulfill this target, the group is conducting several projects on the urban development and sustainability, energy security and diplomacy, social wellbeing and other topics. Several scholars in the team have a wide expertise on Arctic issues, as well. You can get more information about each project from the projects’ page.

At the moment there are 13 researchers from different fields and disciplines involved in the team. To learn more about the research team, visit page People.

All the latest information about the research and activities of the team can be found in the News section of the web-page and on our Twitter. Event calendar is available in the Events section of the website.
