ESN Uni Helsinki is one of the local sections of Erasmus Student Network. Our main tasks are reception of incoming exchange students in University of Helsinki, providing practical information, and organizing free time activities. We provide various cultural and social events for the exchange students, helping you to meet other international and local students and get more out of your exchange period in Helsinki.
Begin your stay in Helsinki with a visit to the Welcome Fair!
In no time at all it will be January and we are looking forward to greet all our new exchange and visiting students here at the University of Helsinki.
Your exchange experience will begin with a visit to the Welcome Fair on January 8th, 2015, as well as your Faculty orientation. So you need to take part in both! Remember to bring your official ID (passport, ID card) with you – otherwise you won’t be able to get all of the official matters out of the way.

Applying to University of Helsinki as an exchange student
Has your home university selected you for student exchange at the University of Helsinki for the spring semester 2015? Congratulations, you are making a good choice! In total, University of Helsinki welcomes about 1000 exchange students each year, for one term or for the full academic year.
If you have already been nominated by your own university, you have taken the first steps towards becoming an exchange student. The next steps of the application process are outlined below.

Language courses at the UH
Learning some Finnish makes sense once you have settled down in Helsinki and at the University. Although it is easy to get by in English at least in the Metropolitan Area to really integrate into Finnish society it makes a lot of sense to learn Finnish. Knowledge of Finnish is also extremely helpful if you seek a job here.
The University has Finnish courses for both degree and exchange students. The Finnish courses are organized by the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies. More information is available on the Department website. If the courses offered by the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies don’t fit into your schedule, you can find information on other options on the Learning Finnish website. Enjoying midsummer celebrations – Juhannus
Midsummer (juhannus in Finnish) for Finns means celebration and the long, white night which is said to be the “nightless” one (yötön yö). In the Helsinki region the sun sets at about 22.50 and rises again already around 4.00 o’clock in the morning. In the Northern Finland the sun does not set at all! The nightless night of Finnish midsummer gives a great contrast to the darkness of the winter time.
Many Finns leave the cities for Midsummer and spend time in their countryside cottages. Midsummer celebrations traditionally include bonfires, sauna, good food, possibly swimming and of course spending time together with family and friends! The University of Helsinki received this spring from Europe over 600 Erasmus and Nordplus applications and from the other continents in various programmes altogether over 100 applications for the autumn 2014 or for the whole academic year 2014-2015! We want to thank you all warmly for applying!
If your application is approved, you will receive your acceptance letter by e-mail, sent by your host faculty. Acceptance information is usually available around the mid-June or latest by the end of June. Before that your application is considered by your host faculty. Please try to wait patiently!
