375 humanists – one for each celebrated year

Capture

To celebrate the University of Helsinki’s 375th birthday, the Faculty of Arts introduces us to 375 humanists, both past and present, who all fare from UH. The campaign aims to show the versatility and societal impact that professionals in arts and humanities have, and it can be found in multiple languages. One or more humanists will be introduced on every day in 2015. Who will be next?

If you’ve travelled to uni by metro recently, you might have seen the signs at Kaisaniemi metro station being changed to “Helsingin yliopisto”. Since University of Helsinki celebrates its 375th birthday this year, the City of Helsinki decided to change the name of the metro station as a gift to the university. Yesterday, on Tuesday 20th of January, the change became official. As a way of celebration and recognition, Helsinki Mayor Jussi Pajunen presented University of Helsinki rector Jukka Kola with the new name plate.

Running in Finland: An International Student’s Perspective

I thought about participating, but I was recovering from an injury I got while running last summer.

This year is a bit different. Like Dina, who wrote this handy little guide, I am participating in the Midnight Run on August 30th and I am very excited about it! Continue reading “Running in Finland: An International Student’s Perspective”

Enjoying midsummer celebrations – Juhannus

Midsummer (juhannus in Finnish) for Finns means celebration and the long, white night which is said to be the “nightless” one (yötön yö). In the Helsinki region the sun sets at about 22.50 and rises again already around 4.00 o’clock in the morning. In the Northern Finland the sun does not set at all! The nightless night of Finnish midsummer gives a great contrast to the darkness of the winter time.

Many Finns leave the cities for Midsummer and spend time in their countryside cottages. Midsummer celebrations traditionally include bonfires, sauna, good food, possibly swimming and of course spending time together with family and friends!
