A little break from the studies – the archipelago experience

Blogi_seaWondering what to do during the Summer vacation? How about spending time in the perfect and relaxing destination in front of our city; the stunningly beautiful archipelago. The sea offers an endless number of opportunities in summer and Helsinki’s shoreline is adorned by around 100 kilometres of coast and over 300 islands. Many of these are rather small, half of them having a surface area of less than 0.5 ha.The public park tradition is quite popular at the islands. That’s because it’s easy to go to the islands with the public water transport service – at least to the biggest islands. Welcome onboard! meikku_pumppi

A world-class university needs to have world-class sport services. UniSport is a directorate commonly owned by University of Helsinki and Aalto University who provides a wide range of high quality health and wellness services, activities for students, staff and the wider community across our six campuses. A range of membership options and casual visit possibility are available with qualified and experienced fitness professionals to assist you in keeping active and having fun while studying or working at the University of Helsinki.

Our slogan is “more than exercise” and that is truly so. Our services were ranked third best University sport service in the world according to ISB survey (International Student Barometer, 2010). I think it is safe to say that we offer something for everyone who is interested in exercising in some way or another and we offer inspiration to those who have not taken that step yet. Our big goal besides making people move is to foster a social environment within the University. Our facilities, classes and events are a great platform to meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere. The only suits we wear are track suits.

You do not have to worry about the weird sounding Finnish language either. Everybody speaks English if necessary and some of the classes and courses are even held in English. UniSport warmly welcomes you to Helsinki. Please show up at our our service desk in any of the six campuses to register and get started!

I have found out my concrete reasons of why I chose Finland

Qian is from China. She studies in the master’s degree programme of Adult Education and Developmental Work Research (ATMO).

Before I came to Finland, I was constantly asked by my friends and colleagues with their puzzling expressions “Why Finland?”. Even after my arrival, the same question seems to be the fixed starter of every conversation with new people. Frankly speaking, I hate this question, because I don’t know what to say; or because my reason sounds very unreal and unconvincing – that is about chemical reaction.

I heard of Finland from my middle school geography class for the first time when I was 14. Then this word hibernated in my little world for more than half decade until I got my first Nokia phone on my 20th birthday. Then this disconnection went on for another half decade until I browsed an old friend’s blog. She studied her bachelor in Finland and the blog was about her Finnish friends and her own experiences in Finland. Well, the articles in her blog are plain, no passionate recommendation or exaggeration. The pictures are also cool in tone. But there emerged this chemical reaction. My intuition told me that it would be the place I want to go. Then I gave up my original plan of studying in France and concentrated totally on the application for the University of Helsinki. And finally I arrived here in Helsinki in late autumn last year. After going through silver-coated winter and now at the time of enjoying the warm sunshine and looking forward to the enchanting legendary summer, I have found out my concrete reasons of “Why Finland?”. One of the best decisions I ever made in my life

Hi, I’m Reza. I am a master student at the University of Helsinki. I came to Finland last year and started my stay here with the Helsinki Summer School. That was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life; everybody was happy and excited, we had a lot of fun there. It was not only an adventurous beginning for my student life in Helsinki but it also gave me, a newcomer, a marvelous view about Finland.

The very advantageous idea was that I joined the HSS Finnish course. I had no clue of Finnish at that time; I had never heard anyone speaking Finnish nor did I know anything about Finno-Ugric languages. Disappointingly I had read on the Internet about it: “hardest language ever”! However, you cannot imagine, after three weeks we all could manage short conversations in Finnish! A few everyday use sentences might not be very much in learning a language but it helps you in many ways, at least you don’t think like you are an absolute stranger who attends an English program, speaks English to everybody and has no connection to the Finnish speaking life. Meet our students! Matthew Mitchell at the 2013 Boston Marathon

Matthew Mitchell is a student in the Master’s Degree Programme in Media and Global Communication at the University of Helsinki. Matthew is running marathons to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Research. In his thesis Matthew is researching the potential power and influence individuals have through new media to affect social change.

Marathon days are by nature triumphant.  They require a commitment from all who participate, their payment first for qualifying, and then for finishing.  I spent my past 6 months training amongst the snowy trails in Helsinki and Siilinjarvi, preparing for the 2013 Boston Marathon.  I have experienced Finland’s winter wonderlands and run and skied in -22 degree (celsius) weather, in forests and on the Baltic Sea.
