Green Week

Green Week is a theme week for the whole University of Helsinki and we welcome you to join it! Most of the lectures in Green Week are held in Finnish, but you can always participate discussion and ask questions in English as well, below you can find program that is in english or bilingual. Garment fixing station (at Porthania lobby, Yliopistonkatu 3): Tekstiilarit Ry gives tips and help to fix your clothes and other textiles. So before you throw it away and buy new stuff why not try and fix it? (More info: Antti Seppälä, antti.seppala [at] helsinki.fi).

Viikki’s campusfarming boxes, Viikinkaari 1 (Biocenter 3 backyard): Could you become an urban farmer? What is campus farming, where does it happen and how to get involved? To learn more and ask questions come to campus farming info (more info: Anni Leppänen, anni-maaria.leppanen@helsinki.fi)

14:00-16:00   Urban Agriculture and Food Systems (V)

Ympäristötalo, Viikinkaari 2, 2nd floor, seminar room 2071: The workshop will be facilitated by Janne Länsipuro, who will talk about urban agriculture and its role in our current food system. The participants will consider the subject together and produce ideas as a team. Länsipuro will also answer any questions you might have concerning campusfarming or farming in general. Länsipuro has a long background in organic farming and currently works in a farming project designed to get children and families to farm in Helsinki. So join us in Viikki to harvest ideas on urban agriculture and its role in our current food system. In order to participate, please make your reservation as soon as possible with the electronic form found here. 16:00-20:00   Workshop – cooking from wastefood and luxury dinner (C)

Student Union central office, Mannerheimintie 5 A, 2nd floor: The Student Union environmental committee hosts a luxury dinner and a cooking workshop on the topic of food waste. In the workshop we will learn to cook creatively from food waste ingredients donated to us by supermarkets and food retailers, lead by a professional chef Janne Länsipuro. At the dinner afterwards we will enjoy the results amoung discussing food waste. NB! The discussion will be held mostly in Finnish, however the cooking and eating parts are very suitable for English speakers too!

The workshop and dinner will be held at the Student Union central office at following times: 16:00-19:00 Cooking workshop (unfortunately full) & 19:00-20:00 Five star dinner. The limit of workshop participants is restricted to 8 people, who can join the cooking and eating free of charge. In addition there are 20 open slots for dinner only participants, who are requested to pay a small (n.1-2€) donation to cover costs from the event.

Reduce a Tonne Challenge

Students of University of Helsinki! Could you imagine dropping the inside temperature of our house by two degrees? What about replacing rice by potatoes on your food plate?

Participate in Ilmastoinfo’s (Climate info) Reduce a Tonne challenge and make your life more climate friendly. The challenge provides you a long list of different kinds of options how you can reduce your carbon footprint. Pick your favorites and make a change today!

The University of Helsinki is participating to the challenge alongside six other universities from the metropolitan area of Helsinki. Our common goal is to reduce 10 000 CO2-eq by the end October. Among the participants the University of Helsinki will raffle a traditional Jopo bicycle. Participate here.

Exchange day on 10th of October

During The Exchange day only items will change ownership and no other currency will be used. On The 10th of October volunteers will organize Exchange day sites in the University. To these sites people can bring items and also take items home for free.

Exchange day sites

– In Fabianinkatu 32 you can find an Exchange day site for books from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One person can bring a maximum of five books to the site. Address: Fabianinkatu 32, 7th Floor. Contact person: Terttu Juntunen (terttu.juntunen@helsinki.fi).

– In the common room of Natura ry in the city of Lahti you can find an Exchange day site open for all items from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exceptionally this site is open from 8th to 10th of October. There is no maximum amount for items that you can bring to the table, but please be reasonable. Address: Niemenkatu 73, Lahti. Contact person: Sonja Rantala (sonja.rantala@helsinki.fi)

– In the coffee room of The Environment center in Viikki you can find an exchange day site for books, games, movies and music between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. One person can bring a maximum of six items to the site. Address. Viikinkaari 2a, 2. floor. Contact person: Janna Pietikäinen (janna.pietikäinen@helsinki.fi)

– In the lobby of Infocenter in Viikki you can find an Exchange day site that is meant for items that are useful in a student apartment e.g books and dishes between 10 a.m and 3 p.m.. One person can bring a maximum of 5 items. Address: Viikinkaari 11. Contact person: The Green team (vihertiimi@helsinki.fi)

– In the common room of student organizations Myy ry and Symbioosi you can find an Exchange day site that is open for all items between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Max. 5 items per person. Address: Biocenter 3, 1. floor, Viikinkaari 1. Contact person: Mari Pieniniemi (mari.pieniniemi@helsinki.fi)
