How it All Started

 How it all started

Once upon a time there was a group of English teachers (Leena Karlsson, Felicity Kjisik and Joan Nordlund) who was concerned for student motivation and well-being. In 1994, they started a programme of autonomous language learning (ALMS) at the University of Helsinki Language Centre. In 1997, they wrote their story and published the book From Here to Autonomy.  The book tells the story behind the setting up of the ALMS programme and contains both personal reflections as well as descriptions of the ALMS framework, along with a foreword by Henri Holec.
