DHN18-workshop

We are happy to tell that our workshop, is part of the program of the DHN18:

Miniature histories – Digitized newspapers and cultural heritage assets as source for the local history

Schedule 6.3.2018 , 9 – 16
Location: Auditorium, Fabiania building, National Library, Yliopistonkatu 1, 2nd floor.

Workshop aims to increase awareness of available free datasets and how they could be utilized in gathering source data for participant’s  own research topic, for example local history. We can gather data and explore pre-existing tools which to create word clouds, image classification or how to capture named entities from texts.  In this workshop we will utilize the digitized collections of the National Library of Finland, especially newspapers at https://digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi  and see what kind of applications could be made either via Wikimedia platform or otherwise from an topic of participant interest.

Alternative questions for the Workshop.

Theme 1: Collecting clippings of local area

Second theme of our workshop is bit more different as there is no programming or special setup needed as everything can be done via browser. Here the idea is to utilize http://digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi – service as a source material for the idea of the miniature histories. What is the topic or region of where you would like to collect information? Which would be good keywords to use? How to combine them to the miniature histories context and e.g. to wikipedia? How to find and create needed clippings from the materials?

Theme 2: Designing for Wikidocumentaries.

How to utilize cultural heritage materials and wikidata and wikipedia for developing new services or enhancing existing services? What kind of data would be needed, who could utilize the data and when?

Extra theme: Classification of newspaper illustrations

What kind of image classification themes would be interesting? Which would be the search criteria for searching the images? Where to get training images, that would be suitable for teaching the algorithms?

You can try e.g. TensorFlow with this example by following the example here (Linux)  or TensorFlow in Windows already beforehand, but the question is how images could be utilized in context of digitized newspapers? What kind of classifications would be useful? Could local places be found from the newspapers, if there is enough pictures of the local areas for starting the training? Or would a generic ‘buildings’ category act as a starting point to find material relevant for the local history.
