Ejournals and Database Subscriptions Renewed

Helsinki University Library has been able to acquire some e-journals and database subscriptions that were originally cancelled for 2016 due the financial cuts. The purchases are made with extra funding from the University Rector. The subscriptions chosen for renewal were the ones the university community missed the most.

Newspapers from around the world – ProQuest Newsstand on trial until 30 April

ProQuest Newsstand database offers unparalleled access to the full text of more than 1300 newspapers, news websites and blogs from leading publishers throughout the world. Major newspapers include The Guardian, Le Monde diplomatique, El Pais, Observer, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe and many others.

You can search a single title by using Search for library resources box on the Library’s website. All titles can also be found in NELLI and HELKA.

Database is on trial until 30 April 2016.

University libraries gather now students and teachers user experience about e-books in studies and teaching. E-books are the electronic versions of printed books which can be read on a computer or mobile device.

Science´s (AAAS) redesigned website makes it easier to access, read, and share articles using a responsive web design that provides an optimal viewing and interaction experience across a wide range of devices from desktop to mobile phones. The new, streamlined design has more accessible article content, one-click article references, sharing tools, and much more.

Furthermore, Science Express is now called “First Release”. First Release provides electronic publication of selected Science papers in advance of print.

The access to Science journals in 2016

In order to access the Science journals the University of Helsinki staff and students need to log in also to Helsinki university network. Remote access works as before.

Remember to update also your bookmarks to: http://www.sciencemag.org.libproxy.helsinki.fi/journals

Due to changes in the pricing policies of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the staff and students of the Open University can use Science journals only in the premises of the Helsinki University Library on the library terminals.

Next year the funding of the Helsinki University Library is cut more than 2 million euros compared to the year 2015. Due to the large savings more than twenty databases and ten reference works are unsubscribed for the year 2016. However, there are still a few weeks left to use those resources. Lists of unsubscribed databases in research areas of City Centre Campus and Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki.

Because of the funding cuts the Library is forced to unsubscribe also hundreds of journals.  Find a list of unsubscribed journals Here.
