The overnight return machine on Fabianinkatu will be renewed. Job will start on Wednesday March 28th in the afternoon and continue on Thursday afternoon, March 29th. The return machine is not in use during the work. The overnight return box should be operational again on Thursday afternoon.

After the Main Library is closed on Wednesday, you can return books to return boxes on Kumpula and Viikki Campus Libraries. The books will be registered as returned on the following work day.

On the Kumpula Campus the overnight return box is located at Physicum’s main entrance (Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a), next to the gray side door.

Next to the main doors of the Viikki Campus Library (Info Centre), there is a joint return box for the Campus Library and the Helsinki City Library in which you may return materials at any time of the day.

RDM, DMP, RDMP…Confused with research data management? Start with the basics lectures in the Kaisa house

How to manage your research data effectively? How to define and describe research data and materials? How to make them openly available and where to store them safely? How to use DMPTuuli in research data management planning?

These and other basic questions will be answered in a RDM basics (Research Data Management) lecture. A RDM basics lecture with the same content is running throughout the year. If you are new to these issues, it is recommended that you start with the RDM basics.  Once your data management plan (DMP) is already in the making, please, join us in the DMPTuuli workshop.

Events are open and free for all University of Helsinki students, researchers and staff members.

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Room also for a group study work

Silence has been the ongoing theme in the Peace and Quiet Campaign all week. However, the library also has spaces in which discussion is allowed. That is why the last theme of the campaign is group study rooms.

There are a total of 30 group study rooms in two learning centres and four libraries. The Main Library’s small group study rooms moved on the 4th floor in the summer 2017, and only two bigger rooms (5005 and 6005) are still on the 5th and 6th floor.

In addition to separate rooms, there are also open spaces for group work, which do not need to be reserved beforehand. Such spaces you’ll find for example at the Learning Centre Minerva and on the first floor of the Terkko Health Hub.

The maximum period for a reservation is 2 hours/group/day

In the busiest weeks of the spring term, group work rooms are 70-80% reserved. Due to high demand, the reservation is limited to two hours per group.

Do not make consecutive reservations for the same group on the same day so that other groups have the same opportunity to book and use group study rooms.

Also, do not reserve group study room for a private reading space. Group study rooms are specifically intended for group work, and can not be reserved for personal use only.

It is ok to use the group study room when there are no reservations, but groups who have made a reservation always take precedence.

Do the booking in your OWA (Outlook Web App) -calendar

The group facilities can only be reserved by the students and staff of the University of Helsinki. All of the library’s and learning centres’ group study rooms are reserved with the HU Office 365 calendar.

Calendar’s roomlists also include spaces that students can not book. Therefore all group facilities in the various library locations are called Group Study Room to make it easier to identify them.

The instructions for booking and rules for using a group study room are available on the library’s web site Services > Group Facilities

Campaigning for Peace and Quiet in the Helsinki University Library

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Let the other visitors work in peace

We receive feedback from one year to another that it should be quieter in the library. However, it is almost impossible to be any quieter than it already is. Normal human voices and sounds must be accepted in a public place.

When you are at the University Library, remember that it is a peaceful environment in which people are primarily studying, reading and working.

Be considerate and let the other visitors work in peace. Keep your voice at a library-appropriate level and make your phone calls on the designated phone locations or somewhere aside, so you don’t disturb others.

WhatsApp number for matters concerning premises and devices

If you spot something wrong in premises or devices at the Kaisa House, and you are not able to solve the situation, you can send a message via WhatsApp.

The Kaisa House customer service reads WhatsApp messages during the service hours, Mon-Fri 10 AM -7 PM, Sat 11 AM – 5 PM. The number you’ll find on posters and info-TV when you visit the library.

The Viikki Campus Library is also going to try WhatsApp, possibly during this spring. We hope that via WhatsApp, reporting is easier for a customer, and that the staff is able to act faster.

Campaigning for Peace and Quiet in the Helsinki University Library, March 5th-13th, 2018

  1. Library is for everyone
  2. Read in harmony with others
  3. Keep an eye on your belongings
  4. Different spaces, different uses
  5. Keep the study areas tidy
  6. Let the other visitors work in peace
  7. Room also for a group study work.

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Keep the study areas tidy

Studying requires a lot of energy and it’s nice to eat something while you are reading. There is a café near the library at all campuses. On Mondays garbage containers are packed with cardboard mugs and salad bowls.

Be considerate to others also when eating your packed lunch. Eat redolence snacks outside reading areas, eg. in the recreational areas, lobby areas or in the student breakroom (on the 3rd floor in the Kaisa House). Remember to clean up afterwards and put the garbage in the litter bin.

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Different spaces, different uses

The library facilities are divided into zones and colour-coded to indicate whether they are silent areas, working spaces or social and recreational facilities.

Our customers are annoyed if designated phone locations are taken into private working places, or if those who speak in the recreational areas with a normal voice are being hissed.

Use the facilities according to their purpose. Leave the designated phone locations free for phone calls, and keep your voice down at the working spaces. Laptops and computers may not be used in quiet reading room (on the 2nd floor in the Kaisa House), the room is reserved for silent reading. Recreational areas are more relaxed facilities, but be considerate there, too.

Please notice, that some of the reading tables on the 4th-6th floor in the Kaisa House are intended for University of Helsinki students, researchers and staff exclusively.

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Keep an eye on your belongings

Campaigning for Peace and Quiet in the Helsinki University Library, March 5th-13th 2018.

You sit in the library with your jacket, bag, books, phone, maybe laptop too, and you need to go to the toilet. It’s only for five minutes, so, what to do? Let me guess: You rush to the nearest toilet, and leave all your belongings to the reading table. Am I right?

It’s handy, yes, but that’s not the way to do it. There’s been quite an unpleasant wave of theft going on in the library this winter, and the property has been stolen even in the presence of the owner.

Please, stay alert while you’re at the library and keep an eye on your belongings. Do not leave your things behind your back so that you do not see them. Do not leave valuables in your pockets.

To prevent theft

  • Never leave your belongings unattended.
  • Secure your bag by placing its strap under your foot or around the foot of your chair.
  • Immediately report to the library staff if you notice something suspicious.

Use lockers

There are lockers in all library locations, where you can leave your belongings.

  • At the Main Library the lockers are on the 3rd floor, near the main entrance in Fabianinkatu, next to the toilets. The lockers work with a 2 euro deposit.
  • At the Kumpula Campus Library the lockers are on the 2nd floor at the Exactum corner. The lockers work with a 0,20 euro deposit.
  • At the Terkko Health Hub you’ll find the lockers both from the 1st and the 2nd floor. In the entrance lobby, the lockers work with a key, other lockers work with a four-digit code.
  • At the Viikki Campus Library the lockers are on the 3rd and 4th floor, between group study rooms and reading area. The lockers work with a key, which you can borrow from the customer service with your library card. Loan period for the key is 4 weeks.

If you’re a victim of theft

  • Tell the library staff.
  • Send message to turvallisuusvalvomo [at] helsinki.fi
  • Provide an accurate description of the theft with the following details:
    1) time and place,
    2) your description (e.g. colour of clothing), and
    3) what items has been stolen.
  • Report the theft to the police. Inform them that the surveillance tape can be inquired from University of Helsinki security services.
