How to manage your research data effectively? How to define and describe research data and materials? How to make them openly available and where to store them safely?  How to use DMPTuuli in research data management planning? These and other basic questions will be answered in a RDM basics (Research Data Management) lecture.

Library’s holiday season opening hours 17.12.2018-13.1.2019

Holiday season opening hours begin on Monday December 17th at the Helsinki University Library. We will return to normal opening hours on Monday January 14th 2018.

Kaisa House is closed between 22nd and 26th of December. Meilahti, Kumpula and Viikki Campus Libraries are closed from Dec. 22nd to January 6th. Kaisa House and Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva are open between holidays on December 27th to 28th.

TUHAT-clinics start Jan 8th @ Kaisa House

During  the January 2019 library offers support for University of Helsinki annual research reporting. Library organizes support clinics for researchers and personnel focusing on reporting into research information system TUHAT.

Library’s customer service desks are closed on Wed 12 December

On Wednesday, December 12, all library’s customer service desks are closed due to the staff development day.

Library premises are open and available on a self-service basis as follows; Main Library Kaisa House 8-20, Kumpula Campus Library 8-18, Meilahti Campus Library 8-20 and Viikki Campus Library 8-19.

At the Self Service Library you can borrow and return material as well as use work stations and study.

When the customer service is closed you can not

  • pay fees at the counter
  • buy copy cards
  • get a temporary account to the wireless network (HUPNet-accounts)
  • get a key to reserved mobile storage unit
  • get ID Point identification service
  • get any personal instruction.

There will be phone service from 10 am to 7 pm. Call 02941 23920.

The Meilahti Campus Library closes earlier on Tuesday, 4 December

There are a bunch of exceptions to Terkko Health Hub’s opening hours at the end of November.

Terkko Health Hub and the Meilahti Campus Library are open Fri 30 November – Fri 7 December as follows:

  • 30.11. Fri 8 am – 5 pm (library customer service 10 am – 5 pm)
  • 3.12. Mon 8 am – 8 pm (library customer service  10 am  – 5 pm)
  • 4.-5.12. Tue-Wed 8 am – 4 pm (library customer service 10 am – 4 pm)
  • 6.12. Thu closed
  • 7.12 Fri 8 am – 8 pm (library customer service 10 am – 5 pm).

Print in City Service to Replace Unigrafia Cardboard Printing Cards

The copying and printing service with the Unigrafia cardboard cards (so called Magna Card)  is terminated at the Helsinki University Library. The new Print in City service replaces cardboard printing cards. With Print in City service, you can print, copy, and scan. The creation of separate guest IDs no longer needed for printing. Guest computers to be phased out at the Helsinki University Library on 30 November

There are a total of 17 computers in the Helsinki University Library that library visitors have been able to use without Helsinki university user account. These guest computers will be phased out on Friday 30 November, 2018.

Guest computers are being phased out due to a technical change in the University’s network management system. As a result of this change, the network environment for guests will be terminated. This change will also allow the library to focus on its core service for users from outside the University: providing access to scientific information and University of Helsinki theses and dissertations.

Library terminals replace guest computers

Even though guest computers are removed, you as a user from outside the University, can still access scientific information from the library terminals. The library terminals allow you to read and search library’s books, articles and e-resources, and read digital theses from the University of Helsinki on the E-Thesis repository. The library terminals will also provide users with access to the Helka database’s customer functions, such as saving your searches and favourites as well as saving references or forwarding them to an email address.

Copying and printing from the the Library terminals with a copy card

The library has some multifunction printers which work with Unigrafia copy cards and can be used without the Helsinki university user ID. You can buy copy cards from library’s customer service desk, check the prices in the price list. For these multifunction printers, you can print articles, reference information, and parts of e-books from the library terminals.

The use of Unigrafia’s copy card for printing will expire at the end of the year 2018. Printing will be handled with the new Print in City -service. Currently, the Print in City service is only available in the Main Library at the Kaisa House.

You can still use the copy cards for copying in the Helsinki University library locations and in the National Library until the end of June 2019. Thereafter, the use of the copy cards will end completely.

Bring your own device

If you’re working on your personal files or searching for information on the internet, you will need to use your own device after November. The library’s customer service desk will provide you with login details for accessing the University’s wireless network HUPnet.

Create a personal bookshelf

BrowZine makes it easy to build your customized bookshelf of favorite journals. To your bookshelf you can add articles from your preferred journals. You can also receive alerts when new articles become available and share article links with others by email, Twitter or bibliographic management systems.

BrowZine is also available for iOS and Android mobile devices. You can read your articles with remote access or download and save them to your device, when the articles can be accessed offline.

Research Data Management basics – sign up for the courses on 23.10., 22.11. and 11.12.

How to define and describe research data and materials? How to make them openly available and where to store them safely?  How to use DMPTuuli in research data management planning?

These and other basic questions will be answered in a RDM basics (Research Data Management) lecture. RDM basics lectures with the same content is running throughout the year. Lectures are open for University of Helsinki students and personnel.
