On top of the Green Guide the University and Climateinfo have an emission saving challenge together called Reduce a ton. You can make your own little climate promises and join the race! Continue reading “Lets make the university greener!”

Moi, are you interested in learning Finnish?

The time to register for the Autumn Semester’s Finnish courses is starting soon! You can study Finnish in The University of Helsinki on all our four campuses: City centre, Viikki, Meilahti and Kumpula campus, and in several different levels of study too.

Why study Finnish you might ask? Because, learning Finnish will help you to settle in, to stay informed of what is happening in the university and in Helsinki and ultimately – if you’re planning on staying in Finland for a longer time – help you in finding a job! It is also part of the degree requirements in some faculties that international students will study at least some Finnish or Swedish. Continue reading “Moi, are you interested in learning Finnish?”

There’s still time to apply for the International Student Grant 2013!

This autumn the University of Helsinki is giving about 50 start-up grants to our international degree students. The International Student Grant, or ISG as we say, is meant for students who are accepted to study in one of the chosen International Master’s Degree Programmes. The amount of each grant will be 1000-1500 euro (paid once) and the application time is open until August 31st 2013 11:59 p.m. (Finnish time GMT +2).

If you are an international degree student moving to Finland from abroad and have already been accepted to the University of Helsinki, you can apply for the grant. You are eligible to apply as soon as you have accepted your placement and registered for studies at the University of Helsinki.

Learn more about the grant and applying for it from the ISG web pages.

The handbook contains a lot of practical information that will help you get started with your student life and to navigate through daily life. It includes for example general information about living in Finland and studying in the University of Helsinki. It’s the ultimate survival guide for new students so browse through and also let your friends know!

Hei! Mitä kuuluu?

languageLearning some Finnish makes sense once you have settled down in Helsinki and at the University. Although it is easy to get by in English – at least in the Metropolitan Area – to really integrate into Finnish society it makes a lot of sense to learn Finnish. Knowledge of Finnish is also extremely helpful if you seek a job here.

The University has Finnish courses for both degree and exchange students. The Finnish courses are organized by the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies. More information is available on the Department website. Continue reading “Hei! Mitä kuuluu?”
