Panu Pulma and Mirkka Lappalainen have been awarded with State Award for Public Information (Valtion tiedonjulkistamispalkinto) for their recent works.

Suomen romanien historia (SKS 2013), edited by Panu Pulma, brings together various scholarships from social sciences and humanities to fill the literature gap regarding the history of gypsies in Finland since the 16th century. The award committee describes the book as ”pioneering, unique and topical”. Earlier this year, the book also received an honorary mention as the “History Book of Year 2012” from Historian ystäväin liitto.

Mirkka Lappalainen was awarded for her book on famine in Finland at the turn of the 18th century Jumalan vihan ruoska. Suuri nälänhätä Suomessa 1695-1697 (Siltala 2012). The committee thanked Lappalainen for opening important historical perspectives for a contemporary reader and acknowledged the book as “carefully structured and exceptionally well written”.
