Roos used Elements of AI online course as his example. From the very beginning, the course teaching basics of artificial intelligence was planned to become a MOOC course for everyone. Roos named as an inspiration Tietoisku announcements, which used to be seen in Finnish television YLE TV 2, since they were addressed to every Finnish person.

Elements of AI is created in cooperation with Reaktor, and Roos introduced in his talk the possibilities in this kind of cooperation with companies. For example, cooperation made it possible to use resources university doesn’t have to create visual user experience. After the talk, audience had many questions about the practicalities of the course: how could I start to build something similar?

Roos highlighted attractiveness and good incentives as one of the key parts for creating a successful online course. He wrapped up the idea into a question: how to change nowadays often heard “I’ll watch a bit more Netflix and postpone studying” to “I’ll study a bit more and postpone watching Netflix”. Even if that might not be the most realistic goal, it is still something worth considering.

Roos käytti esimerkkinään huippusuosion saavuttanutta Elements of AI –verkkokurssia. Tekoälyn perusteita esittelevää kurssia lähdettiin alusta saakka työstämään koko kansan Mooc-kurssina: Roos mainitsi inspiraationaan esimerkiksi aikoinaan TV 2 -kanavalla nähdyt Tietoiskut, joiden kohderyhmänä olivat aivan kaikki suomalaiset.

Elements of AI on toteutettu yhteistyössä Reaktorin kanssa, ja Roos esitteli luennollaan myös yritysyhteistyön mahdollisuuksia. Esimerkiksi kurssin ulkoasun toteutukseen ja viestintään saatiin yritysyhteistyön kautta sellaisia resursseja, joita yliopistolta ei löydy. Luennon jälkeen yleisöllä olikin paljon kysymyksiä juuri käytännön toteutuksesta: kuinka voisi itse lähteä rakentamaan jotakin vastaavaa?

Roos nosti esiin hyvinä verkkokurssin tunnuspiirteinä muun muassa palkitsevuuden, ja tiivisti ajatuksen kysymykseen, että entä jos opiskelija ajattelisi nykyään yleisen ”viivyttelen Netflixin parissa ennen kuin aloitan opiskelun” sijaan toisin päin: ”viivyttelen opiskelun parissa ennen kuin aloitan Netflixin katsomisen”. Vaikka tavoite ei ihan realistinen olisikaan, se on silti ehkä jotakin, jota pitää mielessä.
