The Faculty of Science produced this week the final numbers of graduated students in 2020. Despite the effects of covid-related difficulties last year, also both geoscience programmes saw some increase in the amount of graduates.
The number of BSc graduates in geoscience has been relatively steady for the past three years but 2020 still saw a 29 % increase compared to 2019 from 17 to 22. The number of MSc graduates increased more significantly, by 59 % from 22 in 2019 to 35 in 2020. These numbers are most likely affected by the termination of the old geology degree programme at the end of last year, which presented the “last chance to graduate” for many students still studying in the old system.

However, considering all the challenges and extra effort gone into the covid-related arrangements, this has been a huge amount of work not only for the students but for the staff supervising the record number of both BSc and MSc theses at the end of last year.

Matemaattis-luonnontieteellinen tiedekunta ilmoitti tällä viikolla lopulliset valmistuneiden opiskelijoiden lukumäärät vuodelle 2020. Huolimatta viime vuoden koronatilanteen aiheuttamista haasteista, kasvoi valmistuneiden määrä jonkin verran molemmissa geotieteiden ohjelmissa.
LuK-tutkinnon geotieteissä suorittaneiden lukumäärä on pysynyt suhteellisen vakaana viimeisten kolmen vuoden aikana, mutta vuonna 2020 kasvu oli silti 29 % (17 –> 22) verrattuna edelliseen vuoteen. FM-tutkinnon suorittaneiden määrä kasvoi 59 % (2019: 22; 2020: 35). Näihin lukuihin vaikuttaa todennäköisesti ensi sijassa geologian koulutusohjelman päättyminen viime vuoden lopulla, minkä vuoksi monille vanhassa järjestelmässä vielä opiskelleille opiskelijoille tämä oli viimeinen mahdollisuus valmistua vanhojen tutkintovaatimusten mukaisesti.
Ottaen huomioon kaikki koronavuoteen liittyvät ylimääräiset haasteet ja ponnistukset, on tämä joka tapauksessa vaatinut valtavan panostuksen paitsi opiskelijoilta, myös kaikilta ennätyksellistä määrää lopputöitä viime vuoden lopulla ohjanneelta henkilöstöltä.
