Geo degree programme April board meeting // Geo-koulutusohjelmien huhtikuun johtoryhmäkokous

MSc theses formed a loose theme in the April geoscience degree programme board meeting. The GEO^2 board discussed MSc thesis grading issues, made decisions on approval of thesis grants, and proposed two grant nominees for the K.H. Renlund foundation’s “thesis of the year” award.

Another major discussion point was the mandatory internship in geology and geophysics MSc studies. Internship in the field of geosciences is seen as an important part of the degree studies, but some students also struggle with finding a position in which they could complete this mandatory module. The programme will take a closer look at the curriculum requirements and device additional resources in order to instruct and help students to get the best out of their internship experience.

Maisterintutkielmat muodostivat jonkinlaisen löyhän teeman geo-koulutusohjelmien huhtikuun johtoryhmäkokoukselle. Maisteriohjelman johtoryhmä keskusteli lopputöiden arvioinnista sekä teki päätökset tutkielma-apurahojen kevätlukukauden myönnöistä. Johtoryhmä teki myös ehdotukset K.H. Renlundin säätiön myöntämien tutkielmapalkintojen saajista vuodelle 2020.

Kokouksessa keskusteltiin myös maisterintutkintoon pakollisena kuuluvasta työharjoittelusta. Työharjoittelujakso nähdään tärkeänä osana tutkintoa, mutta samalla on todettu, että joillain opiskelijoilla voi syystä tai toisesta olla hankaluuksia löytää harjoittelupaikkoja, joissa pakollinen opintojakso tulisi suoritettua. Koulutusohjelma tarkastelee tutkintorakennetta ja pyrkii parantamaan työharjoittelun ohjausta, jotta kaikki opiskelijat saisivat opintojaksosta parhaan mahdollisen hyödyn.
