Sustainability Science Days Helsingissä 24-26.5.2023

HUMUS-hanke yhdessä Laurean kanssa järjestää tämän kevään Sustainability Science päivillä oman session: Humans as part of nature: transformative pathways. Keskustelunavauksemme lähtökohtana ovat erilaiset näkökulmat, joiden kautta voimme rakentaa vastuullista ja empaattista toimijuutta ihmisen ja muun luonnon vastavuoroisen suhteen vahvistamiseksi. Tavoitteemme on herättää kiinnostusta ihmisen ja muun luonnon yhteenkytkeytyneisyyden huomioivalle käsitteistölle ja käytännön toiminnoille eri aloilla.
Sessiomme kantava ajatus perustuu ymmärrykseen siitä, että ihminen on kaikkine toimineen osa luonnon kokonaisuutta ja yksi laji muiden joukossa. Joskus tästä kuitenkin seuraa väite, että ihminen voisi lajina siten myös hyödyntää toisia lajeja ja elotonta luontoa täysin omien halujensa ja tarpeidensa mukaan. Tästä syystä näemme yhtäaikaisesti tarpeen purkaa historian saatossa syntynyttä ihminen-luonto dualismia sekä löytää vastuullisia ja empaattisia tapoja olla ihmislajina muiden lajien joukossa ja osana luonnon kiertokulkua.
Sessiossa luomme tilan avoimelle keskustelulle, jossa pohdimme näitä teemoja yhdessä kaikkien osallistujien kanssa. Keskusteluihin meitä johdattelevat seuraavat puheenvuorot:

Toivomme session inspiroivan osallistujia löytämään uusia polkuja tulevaisuuteen – sellaiseen, jossa ihmisen ja muun luonnon välisen vastakkainasettelun sijaan voimme oppia yhä syvempää vastavuoroisuutta muun elollisen ja elottoman luonnon kanssa.
Sessiomme pidetään englanniksi.

Sustainability Science Days in Helsinki 24-26.5.2023
This spring, the HUMUS project together with Laurea organizes its own session, Humans as part of nature: transformative pathways, at Sustainability Science Days. The objective is to discuss the different perspectives through which we can strengthen the reciprocal relationship between humans and the rest of nature. To achieve this, the session aims to create a space for open discussions about the needed understanding of interconnectedness between humans and the rest of nature, both conceptually and in practice, in different fields.
The main idea behind our session is to consider humans as a part of nature among many other species. Sometimes, however, the claim follows that humans are therefore allowed to abuse other species and nonhuman nature according to their desires and needs. In order to dismantle the historically constructed human-nature dualism, we need more responsible and empathic ways of being humans among other species and being part of the cycle of nature.
In the session, together with all the participants, we will create a space for open discussions of these themes with the following introductory speeches:

We hope that our session inspires us all to find new paths to the future – to one where, instead of the confrontation between humans and the rest of nature, we are eager to learn deeper reciprocity with other-than-human nature.
The session is held in English.
