Campaigning for peace and quiet: Let the other visitors work in peace

We receive feedback from one year to another that it should be quieter in the library. However, it is almost impossible to be any quieter than it already is. Normal human voices and sounds must be accepted in a public place.

When you are at the University Library, remember that it is a peaceful environment in which people are primarily studying, reading and working.

Be considerate and let the other visitors work in peace. Keep your voice at a library-appropriate level and make your phone calls on the designated phone locations or somewhere aside, so you don’t disturb others.

WhatsApp number for matters concerning premises and devices

If you spot something wrong in premises or devices at the Kaisa House, and you are not able to solve the situation, you can send a message via WhatsApp.

The Kaisa House customer service reads WhatsApp messages during the service hours, Mon-Fri 10 AM -7 PM, Sat 11 AM – 5 PM. The number you’ll find on posters and info-TV when you visit the library.

The Viikki Campus Library is also going to try WhatsApp, possibly during this spring. We hope that via WhatsApp, reporting is easier for a customer, and that the staff is able to act faster.

Campaigning for peace and quiet: Different spaces, different uses

The library facilities are divided into zones and colour-coded to indicate whether they are silent areas, working spaces or social and recreational facilities.

Our customers are annoyed if designated phone locations are taken into private working places, or if those who speak in the recreational areas with a normal voice are being hissed.

Use the facilities according to their purpose. Leave the designated phone locations free for phone calls, and keep your voice down at the working spaces. Laptops and computers may not be used in quiet reading room (on the 2nd floor in the Kaisa House), the room is reserved for silent reading. Recreational areas are more relaxed facilities, but be considerate there, too.

Please notice, that some of the reading tables on the 4th-6th floor in the Kaisa House are intended for University of Helsinki students, researchers and staff exclusively.

When you are at the University Library, remember that it is a peaceful environment in which people are primarily studying, reading and working.

Instructions for use of the library premises are summarized in the common library rules. By following the rules, we give each other both peace and space to study in the library. These rules apply to everyone.

Industrial Action at the University of Helsinki: Most Library Facilities Closed on 28th of February

Trade unions for the Federation of Salaried Employees (Pardia), the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and the Public Sector Negotiating Commission (JUKO) have submitted notice on a spot strike to be held at the University of Helsinki. The strike will take effect on 28 February at midnight, ending 24 hours later. The objective of the strike is to put pressure on the employer in the negotiations on renewing the terms of the general collective agreement for universities.

As the Helsinki University Library is part of the University of Helsinki, the strike will affect its operations.

On the strike day, 28 February 2018, most Helsinki University Library facilities will be closed. Neither can the library guarantee uninterrupted service by phone or online.

The Helsinki University Library at Kaisa House, the Kumpula Campus Library and the Viikki Campus Library will be closed entirely.

On the strike day, the Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva at the City Centre Campus and Terkko Health Hub at the Meilahti Campus will remain open. However, no customer service will be available at the Meilahti Campus Library.

As a precautionary measure, due dates falling on the strike day, 28 February, have been moved forward to Thursday, 1 March.

Due to the strike, interlibrary loans may also be affected by a day-long delay.

Electronic collections and online services should be available as usual during the strike. Customer support in potential problem situations cannot, however, be provided during the strike.

Beware of thieves at the Kaisa House, keep an eye on your belongings!

There’s been quite an unpleasant wave of theft going on in the last few days.

The thieves seem to be operating professionally. Please, stay alert while you’re at the library and keep an eye on your belongings. Do not leave your things behind your back so that you do not see them. Do not leave valuables in your pockets.

To prevent theft

  • Never leave your belongings unattended.
  • Secure your bag by placing its strap under your foot or around the foot of your chair.
  • Immediately report to the library staff if you notice something suspicious.

If you’re a victim of theft

  • Tell the library staff.
  • Send message to turvallisuusvalvomo [at] helsinki.fi
    • Provide an accurate description of the theft with the following details: 1) time and place, 2) your description (e.g. colour of clothing), and
      3) what items has been stolen.
  • Report the theft to the police. Inform them that the surveillance tape can be inquired from University of Helsinki security services.

Kaisa House is open also on Sundays 4.3.-29.4.

From March 4th until April 29th the Main Library will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Sundays, with the exception of Easter holidays (from Friday March 30th to Monday April 2nd), during which period the building will be closed.

Entrance on Sundays is from Fabianinkatu or by lift from Kaisaniemenkatu (1st floor) or by lift from Helsinki University metro station (floor K1).

Finland’s most popular learning environment works as self-service library

On Sundays Kaisa House will function as a self-service library. The collections and facilities are available to customers on all floors. The customer service on the 3rd floor is closed.

You can pick up your reservations as self-service from the open shelves at the service desk. Should you have problems with using the library or the self-service facilities, phone service will be available.

In case you need a guest login to the University network or copy cards (e.g. for printing), you have to get these earlier in the week.

Collection work precedes alterations in Kumpula Campus Library

There will be significant collection work going on in the Kumpula Campus Library during the spring semester 2018.

Removal boxes in sight again

Removing and moving around collections precedes alteration work scheduled for summer 2018.  Part of the library’s second floor will be converted into working space for the faculty’s researchers.  New student services (Guidance Hub) are planned to be located in the library space, too.

The last opening day at Kumpula Campus Library  before summer will be Friday, May 18th, 2018. The library will reopen refurbished in the autumn 2018. The opening date will be announced later.

Beginning in April, loans cheched out from Kumpula Campus Library will have longer loan periods.  Stay tuned for more information.

Library’s opening hours 18.12.2017-14.1.2018

Holiday season opening hours begin on Monday December 18th at the Helsinki University Library. We will return to normal opening hours on Monday January 15th 2018.

 

 

Kaisa House is closed between 23rd and 26th of Dec., Kumpula and Viikki Campus Libraries are closed from Dec. 23rd to January 1st. Meilahti Campus Library Terkko is closed from Dec. 23rd to Jan. 7th 2018.  Kaisa House and Learning Centres Aleksandria and Minerva are open between holidays on December 27th to 29th.

Please bear in mind that the approaching turn of the year also extends the loan period of books.
