Our genes, our choices : how genotype and gene interactions affect behavior / David Goldman

“Are people free to make choices, or do genes determine behavior? Paradoxically, the answer to both questions is “yes,” because of neurogenetic individuality, a new theory with profound implications. This theory emerged from gene discoveries by Dr. Goldman and his colleagues which have been recently published in ’Nature’. Genetic studies reveal pathways from DNA to behavior that are helping us understand the diversity of human behavior and behavior of other species. In this book, the complexity of human behavior and a person’s ability to choose is explained as deriving from a relatively small number of genes which direct neurodevelopmental sequence. The author uses judicial, political, medical, and ethical examples to illustrate that this lifelong process is guided by individual genotype, molecular and physiologic principles, as well as by randomness and environmental exposures we choose and do not choose. Poses and resolves challenges to moral responsibility raised by modern genetics and neuroscience Preface will be written by a world renowned geneticist or neuroscientist. Authoritatively written, provides a neurogenetic mechanism for the origins of free will and ability to make moral choices to engage a broad audience of professionals.”

Immunity to parasitic infections / edited by Tracey J. Lamb

“Parasitic infections remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the world today. Often endemic in developing countries many parasitic diseases are neglected in terms of research funding and much remains to be understood about parasites and the interactions they have with the immune system. This book examines current knowledge about immune responses to parasitic infections affecting humans, including interactions that occur during co-infections, and how immune responses may be manipulated to develop therapeutic interventions against parasitic infection. For easy reference, the most commonly studied parasites are examined in individual chapters written by investigators at the forefront of their field. An overview of the immune system, as well as introductions to protozoan and helminth parasites, is included to guide background reading. A historical perspective of the field of immunoparasitology acknowledges the contributions of investigators who have been instrumental in developing this field of research.”

Histology for pathologists / editor, Stacey E. Mills ; 4th ed.

“A strong grounding in basic histology is essential for all pathologists. However, there had always been a gap between histology and pathology in which histologic information specifically for the pathologist was often lacking. Histology for Pathologists deals with the microscopic features of normal human tissues, from the perspective of the surgical pathologist. This is the only text that uses human (vs. animal) tissues for the histology. It is the best reference in the literature for information on normal histology, and, as such, is essential for all clinical pathologists. Written by pathologists for pathologists, the new edition will update the pathologist’s understanding of normal histology up to date with the incremental advances made in the last five years. The 3rd edition has become a ’classic’ purchased by virtually all residents beginning their pathology training, as well as pathologists in practice. The 4th edition will build on that substantial foundation”
