Kevät on hyvää aikaa aloittaa uusi harrastus, ja pitenevät päivät sekä (toivottavasti) lämpenevät ilmat houkuttavat ulkoaktiviteettien pariin.
”Juoksu on helppo ja edullinen vaihtoehto liikuntaharrastukseksi, ja mikä parasta, juoksua voi harrastaa missä vaan, milloin vaan ja oikeastaan kuka vaan.”
Juoksu saattaa jo sanana kuulostaa kuitenkin joidenkin mielestä luotaantyöntävältä ja kovin rankalta. Mielessä saattaa käydä pystyykö moiseen, kun edellinen juoksukokemus on yläasteelta cooperin testistä tai armeijan aikaisesta väkisinjuoksemisesta. Mikäli olet kuitenkin perusterve eikä sinulla ole alaraajoissa mitään välitöntä juoksua estävää vammaa, niin lupaan: Pystyt kyllä!
Juoksuharrastuksen aloittaminen kannattaa tehdä fiksusti. Yleisimpiä virheitä (mihin lähes jokainen juoksua joskus aloittanut ja sittemmin muutaman viikon tai kuukauden päästä lopettanut on sortunut) on aloittaa liian kovaa ja rankasti, jolloin keho väsyy viimeistään muutaman kuukauden päästä teholenkkeihin ilman liikunnan riemua – ellei jokin rasitusvamma ole jo tätä ennen katkaissut lupaavasti alkanutta ulkoilukautta.

Juoksun aloittamisen yhteydessä voisi puhua jopa hölkkä-kävely-hölkkä –lenkeistä, jolloin lenkkeily alkaa sopivan matalilla (peruskestävyys)tehoilla ja tehoja voidaan lisätä kun kuntopohja on luotu ja keho totutettu uusiin ärsykkeisiin. Näin vältytään todennäköisimmin rasitusvammoilta (kuten esimerkiksi ”penikkatauti” tai juoksijan polvi) ja myös aiemmin mainittu liikunnan riemu saattaa nostaa päätään, kun lenkkejä ei puristetakaan aina täysillä ja loppuun asti vetäen. Monelle tulee yllätyksenä, kuinka hitaasti oikeasti on juostava, jotta syke ei nouse kohti hapottavia lukemia vaan pysyy peruskestävyysalueella. Näillä alueilla luodaan pohjaa paremmalle kunnolle, mutta tällaiset kevyet lenkit tulisi pitää mukana myös kokeneemman juoksijan viikko- tai kuukausiharjoittelussa rankempien vauhtilenkkien kaverina.
Varusteet
Juoksuharrastusta aloittavan kannattaa panostaa hyviin kenkiin eli juoksulenkkareihin. Varmimmin oikeanlaiset jalkineet löytyvät kokeilemalla ja asiantuntevan lajiin perehtyneen myyjän tai asiantuntijan opastuksella. Kenkiä on markkinoilla paljon, joten ostopäätöstä ei kannata tehdä hätäisesti. Perusmallin lenkkareilla pääsee kuitenkin hyvin alkuun, kunhan kengät eivät hierrä ja pysyvät tukevasti jalassa. Pidemmälle ehtineen harrastajan kannattaa hankkia paritkin erilaiset kengät, jotta kengät kestävät käytössä pidempään ja voit vaihdella jalkinetta lenkkien tehon, pituuden ja maastonkin mukaan.
Sykemittari on mukava lisä niin aloittajalle kuin pidemmällekin ehtineelle, mutta ei suinkaan välttämättömyys. Esimerkiksi jo aiemmin mainitulla peruskestävyyslenkillä sykkeen pitäisi olla ”pitää todellakin pystyä puhumaan hengästymättä”-alueella.

Myös jalkalihaksia kannattaa vahvistaa erilaisin kyykyin ja askelkyykyin, ja ylävartalon hyvä perusvoima auttaa myös hyvän ryhdin ylläpitämisessä juoksun aikana. Myös lihashuoltoa on syytä tehdä, sillä erityisesti jalat saattavat mennä juoksemisesta tukkoon. Varsinkin juoksua aloittaessa pohkeisiin kohdistuu paljon painetta hiukan omasta juoksutekniikasta riippuen ja jotta vältettäisiin mm. sääressä tuntuva penikkatauti tai sen esiasteet, kannattaa pohkeita sekä lonkankoukistajia venytellä ja myös hierotuttaa säännöllisesti.

Lyhyt muistilista juoksun aloittamiseksi
- Älä aloita liian nopealla juoksutempolla vaan juokse mieluummin ajatuksella ”nyt juoksen hitaasti” – pysyt peruskestävyysalueella jolloin luot pohjaa paremmalle kunnolle, vältät rasitusvammoja ja pidät todennäköisemmin juoksuharrastustasi yllä vielä viikonkin päästä!
- Kokeile aluksi hölkkä-kävely-hölkkä -lenkkejä.
- Sykemittari on mukava lisä (mutta ei välttämättömyys!) – se auttaa sinua pysymään peruskestävyysalueella lenkeilläsi ja ”opastaa” sinua näin juoksun aloittamisessa.
- Panosta hyviin kenkiin – etsiydy juoksulenkkariosastolle ja pyydä asiantunteva myyjä paikalle.
- Jos mahdollista, tee oheisharjoitteluna lihaskuntoharjoittelua: suosi keskivartalo- ja jalkalihasten vahvistamista.
- Muista myös venytellä – erityisesti pohkeita ja lonkankoukistaja. Alussa erityisesti pohkeet saattavat mennä tukkoon.
- Säännöllinen lihasten hierotuttaminen on plussaa!
