Moodle is now updated and back in use!

Moodle is now updated to a new version (Moodle 2.4.4+). Service break took only about an hour. This means that Moodle is now back in normal use.

The new Moodle version brings along few cosmetic improvements and some new features which will be handled in detail in UH Moodle guides during summer 2013.

Please contact ok-moodle@helsinki.fi if you have any questions about Moodle.

Moodle will be updated on 10th June 2013 at 10:00-14:00 (service break!).

Moodle will be updated to version 2.4 and is out of use on Monday the 10th of June 2013 starting at 10:00. The estimated duration of service break is four hours. Moodle should be in normal use again at 14:00 (possibly earlier). Please take the service break into account when planning teaching and learning in Moodle at this time.

There will be no drastic changes to Moodle, mostly small improvements such as visual updates (new core icons). Another improvement is a possibility to edit the course overview list at “My Home” page.

Moodle news feed to email

The blog Moodle news at UH has moved to the address https://blogs.helsinki.fi/moodle-news/. At the same time, the blog supports multilangual content and browsing; users can now select what language to use. But note that all entries are not published in all three languages; Finnish is the main language in the future as well.

Another new feature is that you can now subscribe to the news feed in your email. This feed-to-email feature replaces the old mailing list moodle-tiedotus@helsinki.fi that is going to be deleted. Because the blog entries are published in three languages, you can subscribe to any or all of the three separate feeds. You’ll find the links to the email subscription on the main page in the right hand side bar.

Plagiarism control via Moodle

The plagiarism control system Urkund is now in use via Moodle as well. Teachers can choose to activate Urkund control in the Assignment activity. Urkund use requires registration of a personal Urkund account via the web form. When the account is registered, it is combined with the main user account at UH which can be used in future.

Moodle was updated

Moodle was updated during the service break on third January. There were no drastic changes, mostly small improvements to the user experience.

This video (18 minutes) summarizes the most important improvements:

Two things mentioned in the video are note applicable to the UH Moodle installation:

(Starting at 8:50 in the video.) UH Moodle does not have the private files area enabled. File linking is however possible by selecting course files via the Server files repository.

(At 11:40.) UH Moodle will only have the new assignment module available. Old assignments will be converted automatically to the new module during the upgrade. The grading interface has slightly changed; for more information, please read the instructions at Moodle.org.
