Take out your sleds and sleighs, laskiainen is here!

Laskiaisrieha-10

Laskiainen is a Finnish celebration traditionally held on Shrove Tuesday. It is also associated with the Sunday preceding Shrove Tuesday, this year the 15th of February. In previous times, laskiainen was the last celebration before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, but these days it mainly means a day of sleigh-riding and eating laskiaispulla, a special type of bun made just for this occasion. Laskiainen is not a public holiday, however, so you’ll still have lectures! Continue reading “Take out your sleds and sleighs, laskiainen is here!”

Interactions in Urban Space – Meeting each other and interacting in the city

The story began several years ago in my freshman year as a geography student. One day in a lecture a friend of mine asked me to join him in a monthly meeting and a newbie’s evening of an international student organization, EGEA Helsinki. On my own I never would have gone to the meeting, but with friends I became interested and enthusiastic. EGEA Helsinki is an entity of EGEA Europe (European Geography Organization for geography student and young geographers), which organizes various kind of events in Finland and in the European level. It was easy to participate in the events and already in my first year of studies I found myself travelling in Poland for an EGEA exchange. Celebrate the Finnish Independence Day: University Student’s Torch Procession on 6th December

soihtukulkue_blogiOn Saturday 6th December the student unions of the capital region (HYY, AYY, TaiYo and SHS) organise the traditional Independence Day torch procession of university students.

Academic youth from the capital region have celebrated the Finnish Independence Day together since 1951, the year when Marshal of Finland C.G.E. Mannerheim died. The route follows his funeral cortege route in opposite order, starting from the Hietaniemi cemetery and ending at the Senate square. Students follow their respective student organization flags with torches in their hands, and wear their white Finnish student caps for this celebration. Improvisation and English lunches, a story of students of musicology visiting Oxford

We began planning the trip already in the fall of 2013. Our student organisation Synkooppi had not been abroad for quite a while, and some of us were eager for traveling abroad. At the meeting of the board of Synkooppi we chose the Perspectives on Musical Improvisation II conference in Oxford as the main objective of our study trip.

After applying for the grant for student organisations from the Student Services, getting the people together, booking hostels and flights, registering for the conference, and sending dozens of emails, our 9-person-group of students varying from undergraduate to PhD-student was ready to set course for London Gatwick on 8th of September 2014.
