In spite of freezing temperatures outdoors, Helsinki is possibly the warmest place one might choose to spend the winter. I’m not talking about the heating system (though it is generally excellent), rather – the remarkable people one meets daily in the campuses of University of Helsinki: the teachers and students, each carrying their own unique story of their past and future, but all sharing their current common belonging to the university. Enrolled in the International Master’s Degree Programme in Plant Production Sciences, a student from Nepal Shristi Neupane enjoys the high standard of the studies, as well as embraces herself in a variety of extracurricular activities the City of Helsinki offers. Today is Kalevala Day, marking the anniversary of the publication of Kalevala, compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884) from Finnish and Karelian oral folklore and mythology.

Kalevala, the Finnish national epic,  is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala is a major part of Finnish culture and history, and has also impacted the arts in Finland. Also Kalevala characters still live on in business life, in the names given to many Finnish companies such as in the banking sector; Tapiola, Pohjola and Sampo (there is also the icebreaker called Sampo). Other companies in Finland related to Kalevala names are Lemminkäinen (asphalting company), Kaleva (insurance company), Ilmarinen (pension incurance company) and many more. The Kalevala is a unique trademark in the marketing world. Continue reading “Introducing Finland: Today is Kalevala Day!”

Put on your winter woollies and make the most of the winter!

Gretchen Rapasky gives us some good advice how to embrace the wintertime in Finland.
Gretchen Repasky is looking forward to her fourth winter in Finland. She encourages everyone to get outside and embrace and enjoy the wintertime.
“Avoid sitting inside waiting for summer. It will be a long time coming!” says Gretchen Repasky. Originally from Alabama, USA, Repasky was used to winter temperatures before moving to Finland, but her first winter in Finland in 2010 still proved a memorable experience. It was the coldest winter in ages, with record amounts of snow.

“The most surprising thing to me was the excitement shown by most people to the snowy winter and the numbers of people outside all winter long. The snow provided a great environment for fun outdoor play,” Repasky reminisces. Continue reading “Put on your winter woollies and make the most of the winter!”
