Anna – Genetics and Molecular Biosciences, MSc

My name is Anna and I’m a student in the Master’s programme of Genetics and Molecular biosciences. I recieved my bachelor’s degree at University of Helsinki and wrote my bachelor’s thesis on the canonical and noncanonical functions of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. That is where my passion for RNA biology began.

During my HiLIFE trainee period I will be conducting research on the topic of tRNA, the molecules that carry amino acids to the ribosomes during protein synthesis. However, tRNAs are not only simple amino acid carriers: the nucleotides on the tRNA molecules often have different molecular modifications, which have a profound impact on translational speed and accuracy. By researching tRNA modifications, we get a better understanding of gene expression, diseases associated with dysregulation of the tRNA modificome, and the evolution of the genetic code.🧬

I will be characterizing the tRNA modification profiles in different mouse organs in the RNAcious group at University of Helsinki. I’m looking forward to working with professionals in the field and learning more about one of the most basic phenomena of life: translation.👩🏼‍🔬
