There were two presentations from our group at HELDIG Summit, one about FoTran and one about the new Special Interest Group on Language, Speech and Cognition under the umbrella of FCAI.
FCAI-SIG-LSC
The Finnish Centre for Artificial Intelligence FCAI has now a special interest group in Language, Speech and Cognition (FCAI-SIG-LSC). The SIG is also present in a new blog and welcomes new members.
FCAI SIG in Language Speech and Cognition established
The Finnish Center of Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) established a special interest group (SIG) in language, speech and cognition. Language technology and our group is one of the driving forces behind this SIG. The SIG will be introduced at the AI Day on November 26 in Ottaniemi.
Public PhD defence on May, 28: Tommi Jauhiainen
Tommi Jouhiainen is defending his PhD thesis in language technology on “Language Identification in Texts” on Tuesday, May, 28 at 12 in auditorio XII in the main building of the university. The thesis is available at http://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-951-51-5131-5 and the opponent is Nikola Ljubešić from the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana and the University of Zagreb.

There are several projects that will start during spring 2018. One of them is the ERC-funded project Found in Translation (FoTran). We are currently looking for motivated people with a background in computational linguistics or computer science to join our team. MeMAD Kick-off
Language technology participates in the EU Horizon 2020 project MeMAD. The project runs 2018-2020 and we had our official kick-off seminar this week on Tuesday, January 16.
ERC project FoTran
A new project will start in our research group with the title “Found in Translation: Natural Language Understanding with Cross-Lingual Grounding“ funded by the ERC.
