T-Bone Slim – New Interpretations

project’s final seminar
The “T-Bone Slim and the transnational poetics of the migrant left in North America” project (2022–2023) combines research and art to explore the life, literary production, and networks of T-Bone Slim, who was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, into a Finnish migrant family of Central Ostrobothnian origin.
Matti Valentininpoika Huhta (1882–1942), better known by his pseudonym T-Bone Slim, was one of the most prominent figures of the US labor movement. He was a legendary “hobo”, songwriter, poet, and columnist for the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World). T-Bone Slim has long been an inspiration to artists in various fields, but little research has been done about his work.
The working group of the international project will meet for a final seminar at the roots of T-Bone Slim in Kälviä on 18–19 August 2023. During the seminar, the group of researchers and invited artists will discuss new research finds, as well as new artistic interpretations of T-Bone Slim’s work.
The seminar is a hybrid event. The presentations can be followed both via Zoom and on-site at the premises of the Central Ostrobothnian Folk High School (Keski-Pohjanmaan kansanopisto) in Kälviä.
In addition, as part of the seminar program, cultural event will be organized in Kälviä (18 August). The seminar presentations will be in English, but the cultural program is available in Finnish as well. The seminar program and the cultural event is open to all and admission is free.
On June 1st, 2023, the seminar program will be published, and registration opens. Please register by 3 August.

Hankkeen loppuseminaari
“T-Bone Slim and the transnational poetics of the migrant left in North America” -hanke (2022-2023) yhdistää tutkimusta ja taidetta. Hanke tutkii Keski-Pohjanmaalta Yhdysvaltoihin muuttaneeseen siirtolaisperheeseen Ashtabulaan, Ohioon syntyneen T-Bone Slimin elämää, kirjallista tuotantoa ja verkostoja.
Matti Valentininpoika Huhta (1882-1942), joka tunnetaan paremmin salanimellä T-Bone Slim, oli yksi Yhdysvaltain työväenliikkeen merkittävimmistä hahmoista. Hän oli legendaarinen “hobo”, lauluntekijä, runoilija ja IWW:n (Industrial Workers of the World) kolumnisti. T-Bone Slim on pitkään inspiroinut eri alojen taiteilijoita, mutta häneen liittyvää tutkimusta on tehty vasta varsin vähän.
Hankkeen kansainvälinen työryhmä kokoontuu loppuseminaariin T-Bone Slimin juurille Kälviälle 18.–19.8.2023. Seminaarissa tutkijaryhmä ja kutsutut taiteilijat keskustelevat T-Bone Slimiin liittyvistä uusista tutkimustuloksista sekä uusista taiteellisista tulkinnoista.
Seminaari on hybriditapahtuma. Esitelmiä voi seurata sekä paikan päällä . Keski-Pohjanmaan kansanopiston tiloissa Kälviällä että videopalvelu Zoomin välityksellä.
Osana kaikille avointa seminaariohjelmaa järjestetään lisäksi kulttuuritapahtuma Kälviällä (18.8.). Seminaari pidetään englanniksi, mutta kulttuuriohjelmaa on saatavilla myös suomeksi. Seminaari ja perjantai-illan kulttuuritapahtuma ovat avoimia kaikille kiinnostuneille. Vapaa pääsy.
Seminaariohjelma julkaistaan ja ilmoittautuminen avautuu 1.6.2023. Ilmoittauduthan 3.8. mennessä.
