Do you find yourself thinking about climate change and the state of our environment? Do you ever wish you could do something about the situation, but you’re not sure how to go about it? Would you like to meet some like-minded individuals, exchange and hear new ideas about how we can act? Maybe even get involved with some on-going projects? Then the Environmental Committee’s New Members’ Evening is the event for you! Scroll down to the bottom of this post for more details or check the Facebook event here.
What is HYY’s Environmental Committee?
HYY’s Environmental Committee is a part of HYY, the University of Helsinki’s Student Union, and we bring together students who are interested in environmental matters and increase the environmental knowledge and awareness of students. Throughout the year we organise a whole host of events, ranging from workshops, documentary nights, panel discussions, excursions, and much more! The Environmental Committee is also part of the environmental sector of HYY, and works with the HYY board member responsible for the environment to develop HYY’s environment plan.
What have we done before?
Some past events include:
- Sustainable future on a plate: An Eco-Dinner, where all food was prepared in a way that was as environmentally friendly as possible – vegan, organic, local and waste food.
- Excursion to the Finnish Ministry of the Environment: We heard from the experts about plastics and the environment, as well as about current climate policy in Finland in the EU, and had the chance to ask questions.
- Climate Anxiety Documentary night: During HYY’s Sustainable Development Week, we watched Carmen Baltzar’s ‘Happiest Country in the World’ documentary, followed by an audience discussion with the documentary-maker
- Sewing Night for Zero Waste September: In this workshop we learnt how to make our own reusable fruit bags, napkins, cotton pads, and scrunchies from leftover fabrics.
And this is just a flavour of what kind of things we’ve done before! To see more of what has been organised see here.
What could I get involved in?
Some events that are currently in the works include the Flea Market Crawl – similar to the traditional (pub) crawl, but with stops around Helsinki’s huge selection of second-hand stores! Whether you’re a pro-thrifter or didn’t even know Helsinki had flea markets, all interested are welcome to lend a hand on the organising team. We have plenty of other events and campaigns planned for the spring – come join us next Thursday to hear more about them!
HYY’s Environmental Committee is a place where you really can make a difference for the environment, and where your voice as a student will be heard all the way up at the top. In addition to this, the committee is a great way to meet other like-minded students from across campuses, be inspired, and make new friends for life.
If this has peaked your interest and you’d like to hear more, chat with some eco-minded people over snacks, and possibly even get involved with some of our projects, then definitely pop into the New Members’ Evening next Thursday – we look forward to meeting you!
