Vasara in English

Vasara welcomes all the new international students! Here you can find the information about the geology student organization Vasara in English.

What is it?

Vasara (Hammer in English) is the student organization of the geology students in University of Helsinki.

Vasara takes care of advocating the rights of students in the faculty and arranges wide variety of activities. Moreover, it is a community to support the social aspect of student life and getting to know other students.

The student room in the Geology department is Kasvis (Greenhouse) (that small room to left from the door to Physicum lobby). The activities are run by the board of Vasara but additionally there are other officials in charge of organizing for instance sauna evenings, cleaning of Kasvis, arranging sports and cultural events. The board and officials are elected on the election meeting of Vasara in the late autumn.

Traditional events are, the Ice Age ball (also Vasara’s birthday ball), summer meeting, Labor Day baseball, pre-Christmas party, sauna evenings, fuksiaiset, sports event every week at UniSport and the Geological citymapping with geology students from other Finnish universities (Turku and Oulu). Vasara generally supports members cultural or sport excursions by sponsoring group events to for example climbing or laser tag.

Vasara traditionally arranges foreign excursions outside Finland. During the recent years, there has been excursions to Norway, Sweden, Azores, Ireland, Iceland and the United States.

In student events, members of Vasara are recognized by their silver-colored overalls (overalls are a thing in Finnish student life).
