The Finnish Center of Chinese Law and Chinese Legal Culture invites applications for

ONE DOCTORAL CANDIDATE EMPLOYMENT POSITION

for a 1–2 year period starting from 1.8.2016. The duration of the employment contract depends on the phase of the appointee’s thesis.

 

 

Description:

The Finnish Center of Chinese Law and Chinese Legal Culture, members of which include nine universities, is an institution that promotes research and education in Chinese law and Chinese legal culture. One of the main purposes of the Center is to support the research concerning Chinese law and legal culture currently undertaken by the member institutions.

In December 2015, the Tiina and Antti Herlin Fund made a donation to the Center with the purpose of funding the salary of a PhD Candidate conducting Chinese Law related research for 1 to 2 years.

The aim is to stimulate researchers to expand their research focus towards research connected with China. The main purpose of the scholarship is to enable the awardee to carry out his/her research work on Chinese Law.

Responsibilities:

The duties of a doctoral student are to work on his or her own doctoral dissertation and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. In addition to conducting research leading to the doctoral dissertation, the doctoral student will participate in teaching duties and other duties at the Center and the Faculty in which she/he will be enrolled.

Requirements:

A doctoral student must hold a second-cycle degree and have an approved research proposal. Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal.

The appointee must hold the right to pursue a doctoral degree at one of the member universities by the start of the appointment.

The member universities are University of Helsinki, Aalto University; Hanken School of Economics; Lappeenranta University of Technology; University of Eastern Finland; University of Lapland; University of Tampere; University of Turku; University of Vaasa.

Offer:

A doctoral candidate employment contract for a 1–2 year period starting from 1.8.2016 is offered. The offered salary dependent on the qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

–        research plan (max 6 pages)

–        a working plan, which specifies the work intended to be accomplish during the funding period; the plans should include timetable and information on possible previous tasks and funding for this research project

–        curriculum vitae and a list of (possible) publications (or alternatively, an academic portfolio containing the above mentioned documents and information) (max 3 pages);

The closing date for the applications is 20 May 2016.

** Prior to applying the applicant must be in contact with the supervisor of his/her doctoral studies.

Selection procedure:

The representatives of the member universities will jointly select the candidate and propose her/him to be employed by the home university of the candidate. If the proposed candidate does not want to take the offered position, it will be offered to the candidate who stands second on the reserve list. That candidate may be from another university.

The China Law Research Workshop: a platform to exchange insights on doing China Law research

China Law Research Workshop

The China Law Research Workshop, held on 21-22 March 2016 in Helsinki, offered a unique opportunity for getting information and fresh insights on how to China related legal research. The Workshop, led by Professor Alan C. Neal and Professor Ronald Brown, furthered the understanding of the research landscape in the field of law. 

The invitation to the seminar has been widely circulated and over 50 participants, coming from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, UK, Germany and Poland. have registered. Therefore, in connection to the seminar, a separate networking meeting was organized to offer a platform for exchange of ideas and insights between researchers.

Collaboration Agreement with CASS Institute of Law has been extended

Professor’s Nuotio visited China in December 2015. During his visit in Beijing, the Chair of the Center’s Board has signed the Extension of Collaboration Agreement with CASS, Institute of Law. The extension serves to further develop scientific cooperation and broaden the already very successful collaborative relationship.DSC_9435_副本

Dean Kimmo Nuotio was invited to Beijing to speak at the International Conference on the “Rule of Law and Judicial Reform”, annually organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Institute of Law. The event was held in Beijing on 11-12 December.

Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki Joined the New Silk Road Law School Alliance as the Founding Institution

415A4353During his visit in China, Dean Kimmo Nuotio attended the New Silk Road Law Schools Alliance Launch Ceremony at Law School, Xi’an Jiaotong University, in Xi’an, capital city of Shanxi Province. Faculty of Law University of Helsinki joined 8 law schools outside China, 2 law schools in Hong Kong and Taiwan, 10 in mainland China, as the founding institutions in the Launch Ceremony. The alliance aims to become a platform for the promotion of international collaboration on legal education and research.

TransIP project closing seminar presented its findings

The international closing conference on the Legal Transplant for Innovation and Creativity ? China and the Evolution of IP Norms was held in Helsinki during the first week of December.
Distinguished guest flew over from China, Germany, United States, and Germany to attend the conference and discuss pressing topics ranging from information and communication, to traditional knowledge. The presentations and discussions taking place within context of the conference where related to the project findings’ and also future
needs for research brought to the spotlight by the TranSIP project. This awaited closing conference was also to celebrate the upcoming book Governance of Intellectual Property Rights in China and Europe which is one among the several achievements of the TranSIP project.

Discussing the Multilateral Environmental Agreements at the 12th UEF – UN Environment Programme Course

The Twelfth University of Eastern Finland – United Nations Environment Programme Course on Multilateral Environmental Agreements was held in November 2-12, 2015 at the Nordic Centre Fudan University, Shanghai, China. The course was hosted by the Fudan Nordic Centre in cooperation with Fudan University Law School and UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development,

There were 22 participants from 22 countries attending the course, as well as lecturers and resource persons around the world. The total amount of applications to the course was over 270.

The theme of the 2015 Course was climate change. 1H0A7840_copyThe course covered a broad range of topics related to climate change and multilateral environmental agreements, from climate change mitigation and adaptation to climate finance and technology. A special emphasis was given to the ongoing negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change for a new climate agreement. The course also covered general issues relating to international environmental law-making and diplomacy. The two-week training course culminated to a two-day climate negotiation simulation.
