Synopsis:

“In 1820, young Noboru Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama) completes his medical education in Nagasaki and returns to his native Edo hoping both to marry the daughter of a wealthy man and to achieve affluence himself through his medical practice. He happens to visit the famed Koishikawa clinic for the indigent, which is run by the autocratic Dr. Kyojo Niide (Toshiro Mifune), better known as Red Beard. To his intense displeasure, he soon finds himself assigned to the clinic for his internship. At first, the young intern is arrogant and rebellious, intent on displaying his knowledge of medical innovations and contemptuous of the older doctor for spending his life among the poor. But as time passes, he gains an intimate knowledge of the kind of suffering that is endemic to the impoverished, and at length, becomes an acolyte of this seemingly dictatorial physician, who heals his patients with gentleness and humility as much as with his medical skill.”

Alan Weisman: Maailma ilman meitä

(World Without Us, 2007)

(Suom. Ulla Lempinen & Tiina Ohinmaa, 2008)

Kustantajan kuvaus:

Time-lehti valitsi teoksen viime vuoden parhaaksi tietokirjaksi.”

Joseph L. Mankiewicz: Meistä juorutaan

Synopsis:

“People Will Talk was less a movie than a conduit for the genteel liberalism of screenwriter/director Joseph M. Mankiewicz.  Cary Grant plays Dr. Praetorius, an unorthodox medical professor at a sedate midwestern college who seems more interested in the human soul than in the cold facts of the human body. Praetorius’ nemesis is a conservative rival doctor (Hume Cronyn) who presses for an investigation of our hero’s clouded past–with special emphasis given the mysterious old man (Finlay Currie) who lives with Praetorius and waits on him hand and foot. In the course of the film, Praetorius falls in love with one of his students, an unmarried pregnant girl (Jeanne Crain). At the climactic hearing concerning Praetorius’ fitness, the presiding judge (Basil Ruysdael) decides that Praetorius’ “modern” methods are more worthwhile than the pragmatic, cut-and-dried theories of his enemies. Based on a German play by Curt Goetz, People Will Talk is a bit too proud of its own cleverness, with Mankiewicz’ political planks being wedged in at all the inappropriate times (while conversing with the father of the pregnant girl, Praetorius launches on a gratuitous attack against farm subsidies!) Still, the film is ten times more intelligent than most of Hollywood’s 1951 output, and contains one of Cary Grant’s best and subtlest seriocomic performances. Bonus: In the first scene of People Will Talk, the snoopy lady who brings Praetorius’ “shady” past to the attention of Hume Cronyn is played by an uncredited Margaret (“Wicked Witch of the West”) Hamilton.”

A. S. Byatt : Riivaus : romanttinen kertomus

(Possession : A Romance , 1990)

(Suom. Marja Alopaeus , 2008)

Kustantajan kuvaus:

”A. S. Byattin tunnetuin teos Riivaus.
Riivaus on romaani ihmisen loputtomasta kaipuusta johonkin – kunniaan, toisen lähelle, eri aikakauteen, osaksi jotain suurempaa.”

Miina Savolainen: Maailman ihanin tyttö / The Loveliest Girl in the World , (2008)

Kustantajan kuvaus:

”Vuoden kauneimpana kuvakirjana palkittu Maailman ihanin tyttö on koskettava kasvutarina näkyväksi tulemisesta ja itsen hyväksymisestä. Kaksikielinen Maailman ihanin tyttö – The Loveliest Girl In The World -kirja pohjautuu kymmenen lastenkodissa kasvaneen nuoren naisen ja valokuvaaja Miina Savolaisen vuosikymmenen jatkuneeseen, palkittuun valokuvaprojektiin.

Synopsis:

“The astonishing true-life story of Jean-Dominic Bauby — a man who held the world in his palm, lost everything to sudden paralysis at 43 years old, and somehow found the strength to rebound — first touched the world in Bauby’s best-selling autobiography The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (aka La Scaphandre et la Papillon), then in Jean-Jacques Beineix’s half-hour 1997 documentary of Bauby at work, released under the same title, and, ten years after that, in this Cannes-selected docudrama, helmed by Julian Schnabel (Basquiat) and adapted from the memoir by Ronald Harwood (Cromwell). The Schnabel/Harwood picture follows Bauby’s story to the letter — his instantaneous descent from a wealthy and congenial playboy and the editor of French Elle, to a bed-bound, hospitalized stroke victim with an inactive brain stem that made it impossible for him to speak or move a muscle of his body. This prison, as it were, became a kind of “diving bell” for Bauby — one with no means of escape. With the editor’s mind unaffected, his only solace lay in the “butterfly” of his seemingly depthless fantasies and memories. Because of Bauby’s physical restriction, he only possessed one channel for communication with the outside world: ocular activity. By moving his eyes and blinking, he not only began to interact again with the world around him, but — astonishingly — authored the said memoir via a code used to signify specific letters of the alphabet. In Schnabel’s picture, Mathieu Amalric tackles the difficult role of Bauby ; the film co-stars Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, Anne Consigny, and Patrick Chesnais.”

Synopsis:

”Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte give brilliant performances as parents trying to save the life of their son in George Miller’s harrowing and heartbreaking Lorenzo’s Oil. Based on a true story, the film begins as bright young Lorenzo (Zack O’Malley Greenburg) is leading a pleasant life on the Comoro Islands. But things start to go wrong with him — he collapses, he raves, and he loses his hearing — so his concerned parents, Augusto (Nick Nolte) and Michaela Odone (Susan Sarandon), take him to a doctor. The diagnosis is a death warrant; they are told that Lorenzo has been diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), an rare and incurable nerve disease that is always fatal. When Augusto and Michaela are told to be patient as they watch their son sink further into the debilitating illness, they take matters into their own hands and start their own investigation of the disease. Using rapeseed oil, they find their own treatment for ALD.”
