“Etelä-Afrikka apartheidin jälkeen.

Viisikymppinen kirjallisuuden professori David Lurie, kahdesti eronnut mies, solmii suhteen oppilaaseensa. Tyttö kyllästyy pian mieheen ja syyttää tätä seksuaalisesta häirinnästä. Lurie erotetaan yliopistosta.

Kokemastaan hämmentyneenä Lurie vetäytyy yksin elävän tyttärensä Lucyn syrjäiselle maatilalle. Hän myy tilan tuotteita torilla, hoitaa kennelin koiria ja oppii ajan myötä tuntemaan myös naapurinsa. Valkoiset ja mustat elävät seudulla rinnan, mutta voimasuhteet ovat muuttuneet.
