Tässä Pulizerin palkinnon saaneessa teoksessa syöpälääkäri ja tutkija Siddhartha Mukherjee tutkii syöpää solubiologin tarkkuudella, historioitsijan perspektiivistä ja elämäkerran kirjoittajan intohimolla. Tulos on selkeä kronikka ihmisen taistelusta tappajaa vastaan.
Aikojen saatossa käsitys syövästä on muuttunut. Vielä sata vuotta sitten sitä koskevat tiedot olivat erittäin vähäiset ja hoito laajaa kirurgiaa.
Röntgensäteiden keksimisen jälkeen toiseksi aseeksi tuli sädehoito. Ja viime vuosisadan puolivälissä löydettiin muutamia kemikaaleja, joilla voidaan käydä joitakin syövän muotoja vastaan. Syntyi kemoterapia.
Kolmisenkymmentä vuotta sitten järeän hoidon rinnalle tuli saattohoito ja syöpäpotilaat saivat kuolla arvokkaasti.
Samaan aikaan syöpäbiologia tutki syövän toimintaa solutasolla ja tällä hetkellä käsitys syövän luonteesta alkaa olla pääpiirteissään tiedossa. Ja ongelman valtavuus on selkiytymässä.
Ihminen on oppinut hoitamaan joitakin syöpiä, viivyttämään niiden etenemistä ja ehkä jopa parantamaan joitakin syövän muotoja. Taistelu on kuitenkin vasta alussa.
Siddhartha Mukherjee on lääketieteen apulaisprofessori Columbia Universityssa.
