My six months of research with S&T
Currently I give an overview of my research work within the six months period from January to June 2021.

The beginning of the year started with challenges. I had received a rejection response from the journal where the third article was submitted and at the end of January I decided to change journal also for my second article due to the prolonged review process. I decided to continue the process to find new journals for both of my articles.

Evaluating the situation and the received feedback to the articles with my supervisor, the following steps were considered: to submit second article to the subject specific journal as the article focused mostly on handicraft and home economics student teachers’ experiences of becoming teacher and describing emerged typologies among these student teachers; to change the analysis method in the third article to have broader outcome and to submit it to the journal that relates to teacher education.

Within this process the new analysis of the data took most of the time, as the third article changed the theoretical framework, focusing now on student teachers’ professional development during their school practice. The centre of the analysis was Herbart’s extended didactical triangle and its relationships. This opened new possibilities to describe handicraft and home economics student teachers’ experiences. I sincerely enjoyed this analysis process; however, it was also challenging to define certain relationships as they are not so clearly visible in students’ writings and therefore needed a deeper thinking process and discussion with others. The analysis was done in March and after that the process of compiling other parts of the article continued. Meanwhile also the 2nd article was submitted and the green light from the editor was received, which meant that the review process was started. This raised positive feelings to continue with the third article.

In April and May, the different parts of the 3rd article were written. Some parts of the previous version needed rewriting, like the methods part, where some of the things remained the same, e.g., participants’ description and ethical aspects. The newly written parts were the analysis section, results, discussion, and introduction. Abstract had to be overlooked and changed according to the latest version of the article. I am sincerely thankful to my both co-authors for their contribution to the article’s writing process. Without their support I wouldn’t have survived during this challenging period.
The motivation to finalize and submit the article before July gave strength to proceed with language editing and proofreading. Finally, the 3rd article was submitted.

Hereby I express my gratitude for receiving S&T scholarship to continue with my doctoral studies within these 6 months period in 2021. These months gave me valuable time to rethink and rewrite my articles, especially the 3rd one. I will continue my doctoral studies with writing thesis summary, which unfortunately was left aside this spring due to articles’ writing.

My year of research with S&T
I am very grateful for the scholarship S&T provided to support my doctoral studies during 2020. I have had productive year, focusing more on my research. The year was most interesting in the sense of achieving my personal research related goals and the situation with the corona-crisis since March 2020.

In the beginning of the year my main direction was to get your third article ready for submission. However, the polishing the different parts of the article were interrupted in March, when the long-awaited reviews for the second article came. It had been 7 months of waiting. The reviewers’ comments directed to major revisions in the article to be re-submitted to the same journal. The rethinking and rewriting process had to be done in a reasonable amount of time for the resubmission. I managed to finalize the article in April and the second period of waiting for the reviews started.

Within this research process this 2020 spring period also brought challenge in combining working and personal life. As the schools were closed during whole spring, the everyday patterns had to be changed. If all family is at home doing their regular work and classes, sometimes online and sometimes offline. Needing and asking for assistance or a snack or just a chat. Setting restrictions and organizing daily work was particularly important during this period. Certain writing goals had to be set to finish my plan I had arranged in advance. Finally I had my third article submitted in June. At this phase I had was satisfied with my work done so far and started the next phase – considering the structure of my thesis summary. In the meanwhile I had got acquainted with the requirements of the thesis summary and explored and read some thesis for outlining different parts.

In autumn the previously written subject matter were collected to get an overview of the existing data, materials and texts. I decided to start my summary writing with context description and with research design and methods, as these are based on methods used in my articles.

In the end of the year not so good news about third article came, as this journal unfortunately felt that it is unsuitable for them, stating that however this is an important theme to handle, the article definitely belongs in a journal on home economics (as this journal was about education in general). Reviewers’ feedback was constructive and the comments were a good basis for making adjustments to the article. The need for finding another journal for a submission was relevant. However, having heard about the delays in reviewing process due to coronavirus, it was a challenging choice what journal to take. This important decision was made in 2021.

The third part of my doctoral studies lasted from March 2020 to end of July 2020. During that time the manuscript of my third article was completed and most of the summary of the thesis written. Luckily, this period included mainly writing work and the Covid-19 virus did not affect the ability to proceed with the work.

In the beginning of March, this period started with an international conference, NERA/NFPF 2020, held in Turku (4.-6.3.20). There I held a conference presentation in a Home Economics symposium presenting my second part-study. Additionally, I listened several interesting presentations, from both fields of Home economics and multidisciplinary learning. Seeing the national and international colleagues was also a delight.

March brought good news also about publications and my second article was published online in the 1st of April (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00220272.2020.1759145). This gave me an extra push to write the third manuscript ready and in May it was sent to the Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. In this study a diamond ranking method was used to study pupils’ perspective on integrative approach to learning. The main conclusion was that the pupils held collaborative group work utilising interthinking important for succeeding in integrative learning task, together with teacher-chosen practical elements, such as being able to use a computer. Rest of the study period I used to write the summary of the thesis. Over this time, the main parts were written, yet several rounds of rewriting were left to be done.

Virtual seminar group meetings were held during this study period and one of the most interesting of them was the virtual summer meeting (1.6.2020), where we got to hear about the upcoming study about the history of home economics teacher education in Swedish. These seminars and the seminar group members with my supervisors have been the most valuable support for my work.

I sincerely thank the Foundation of Elli Suninen ja Rachel Troberg for supporting my doctoral studies and enabling me to work with such an interesting field of research.

Second year as a doctoral student – summary

Starting my second year as a doctoral student (2/2019), my first article had just been published (https://doi.org/10.1080/00131881.2018.1564626) and I had started to write the theoretical part for my second article. In March, I attended my first international conference, NERA/NFPF 2019, in Uppsala, Sweden (6.-8.3.19), where I held a conference presentation in a Home Economics symposium presenting my first part-study. This was a fruitful journey, which broadened my views and provided several pleasant new acquaintances in both fields of home economics and education research.

As the spring went by, and also several rounds of reading, writing, thinking and re-writing, the theoretical background of my second part-study was getting together. Then, it was time to analyse the data, which I had collected simultaneously with the data for the first article. Data analysis followed the guidelines of a theory-driven content analysis, and consisted of listening to teachers’ interviews, transcribing them and analysing the content.

After the data analysis, I went back to the manuscript and started writing the results, limitations and conclusions, followed with several rounds of polishing the manuscript. During the summer symposium of our seminar group in the beginning of the June, I got a lot of good ideas for improvement. Eventually, at the end of the June, the manuscript was submitted to The Journal of Curriculum Studies (https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tcus20/current).

After submission, there is a moment of satisfaction, which then, in a blink, turns into excitement of waiting the review from the paper. Having the review often takes a while, so I set my mind into the next article and found plenty of joy in the thought that this was already the third article I was starting with. So, I fell into work with composing the theoretical background, designing the data collection and finding suitable participants (teacher and pupils). For all this, our seminar group meetings were very useful and my supervisors’ support most valuable.

The third part-study utilises diamond ranking method and during November and December, the data collection method was first pre-tested and then the data collected. January and February went by with analysing the data and the second study year draw to an end.

Simultaneously with working with the third article, the second article went onwards in its own procedure. In September, the reviews came and luckily, they wanted me to resubmit. I received very thoughtful reviews and made major revisions to the manuscript. At the end of January, another round of reviews came and again some revisions were asked to be done. These rounds of revisioning and resubmitting improved the article a great deal, so even when the process was long, it was worth the wait. And even going beyond the timeline of this article, I am glad to reveal, that in April, the manuscript was accepted for publication and published online on 1st of May (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00220272.2020.1759145).

I sincerely thank the Foundation of Elli Suninen ja Rachel Troberg for supporting my doctoral studies and enabling me to work with such an interesting field of research.

Opiskelijoita on rohkaistu POPS (2014) mukaisiin opetusmenetelmiin, joissa korostetaan oppilaan roolia aktiivisena toimijana.

Työkaluja on kokeiltu eri harjoitteluissa vuosina 2017-2019.

Hankkeesta tiedottaminen

Keväällä 2019 toteutettiin opetusharjoittelun ohjaajakoulutus, johon osallistuu 12 kotitalousopettajaa.

Filosofian tohtori Anne Malin on kotitalouden didaktiikan yliopistonlehtori, Helsingin yliopisto

A year of my research in 2019 with S&T

January brought me good news about the submission of my first article. The final steps before publishing were just an excitement – to have a proof-version of the article and to check all the details. It was amazing how intense the end of the publication process is. Finally my article, written with my supervisor Päivi Palojoki, named Aims and challenges of handicraft and home economics education in Estonia, was published and openly accessed from the website of the International Journal of Consumer Studies https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ijcs.12509

During next months, after this pleasing news, the motivation to continue my second article writing increased rapidly. As I had already collected all the data needed for the next article, the process continued mainly with data analysis, digging into previously collected data to be presented in the second article. Having previously good experiences with computer-based data analysis, I had an opportunity to attend the Atlas.ti continuation course, which had most appropriate timing for me – using your own data in course assignments.  The coding could be the main focus at that period; however, the several other activities take place simultaneously, such as collecting next data and writing paragraphs of the second article. Within springtime I managed to draft the next article and in May I had an opportunity to participate in an article workshop organised by FinEd Network (http://www.fined.fi/en/fined-2/) in Tampere. I truly appreciate the discussions we had over article drafts in small groups of other PhD students and researchers.

In the beginning of June our seminar group “Food, culture and learning” had an intensive whole day seminar, where I received useful comments on my final version of the article. Following the period involved polishing the paper, and other necessary procedures like language editing and submission guidelines check. The article was finally submitted in August. And then the long-time waiting for reviews started.

Doing an article based doctoral thesis, the major challenge to overcome is the starting from blank page every time with each article. It makes you to think through your manuscript and all the parts of it. My third article started with a data analysis, which started with reading data I collected during this year. I followed the previous practice with an analysis and used computer-based assistance. The challenge with an analysis is the translations, as article will be in English and the outcomes of the analysis and excerpts from data should be carrying the same meaning as in original language. Therefore finding the correct names to the themes is essential at this stage. And yet, the preliminary results might not be satisfying, which often lead to the need of next round of analysis. In my practice, the analysis usually needs time to think through all the process and see the connections, as the best ideas may come after some time. The autumn was filled mainly with reading literature and various studies to create a theoretical background of my third article. At the same time the methodological part of the manuscript writing was in focus. In the end of the year the draft version of my article was discussed in our research group seminar, although the article was not having all the parts, the received feedback and comments helped me to continue the process. At the end of the year I was satisfied with the work done so far.

NERA 4.-6.3.2020, Turku: Rethinking the futures of education in the Nordic countries

The Nordic Educational Research Association (NERA) järjesti 48. pohjoismaisen konferenssin Turussa.

Omien symposium-sessioidemme lisäksi valitsin seurattavaksi konferenssin laajasta tarjonnasta kiinnostavia esityksiä liittyen monialaiseen opetukseen, johon oma tutkimuksenikin liittyy. Lisäksi tutustuin suureen joukkoon postereita. Näistä kaikki tarjosivat ajatuksia etenkin menetelmällisistä ratkaisuista ja niiden perusteluista sekä arvokkaita lisäyksiä lukemistoon. Keynote sessioista etenkin Kristi Kletten esitys ilahdutti keskittymällä videoaineiston analyysitapoihin valmiiden analyysimallien avulla. Valmiit mallit tarjoavat yhteisen kielen ja käsitteistön analyysille, joka etenkin kansainvälisessä tutkimuksessa on tärkeää. Samalla valmiit mallit voivat kuitenkin tahtomattaan yksipuolistaa analyysiä ja heikentää erojen taustalla olevien kansallisesta kontekstista nousevien seikkojen tavoittamista. Kolmipäiväinen konferenssi huipentui paneelikeskusteluun korkeakoulutuksen tulevaisuudesta Pohjoismaissa.

Konferenssin merkitys aloittelevalle tutkijalle

Toivottavasti tapaamme taas silloin (kotitalouden) tutkimuksen äärellä.

Janni Haapaniemi on Helsingin yliopiston kasvatustieteen jatko-opiskelija, jonka kiinnostuksen kohteita ovat etenkin peruskoulun kotitalousopetus ja oppiaineyhteistyö.
