Social Identity Approach – and where it can take us in the study of religious groups

A book review by Marie Snedker

Humans are social beings. We live together. We die together. Our way of engaging with each other is determined by the norms, values, and rituals of the society. Therefore, the individual identity is also determined by the collective which inscribes the individual person with a plethora of social identities. In the past 40 years, there has been a growing interest on the research of social identity. Some of the forerunners in this field are Henri Tajfel and John Turner, who in the late 1970’s and 80’s introduced the Social Identity Theory. Later it became to be known in a more elaborated form as Social Identity Approach.
