Hanken School of Economics became Center’s new Member

hanken_logo_rgbWe are glad to announce that Hanken School of Economics became the ninth Member of the Finnish Center of Chinese Law and Chinese Legal Culture on 12 December 2013.

Hanken hosts the Academy of Finland research project “Legal Transplant For Innovation and Creativity – A Sino-Finnish Comparative Study on the Governance of Intellectual Property Rights” (TranSIP) and organizes courses on IPR in China.

Hanken has been an important partner to the Center and we are glad that it has become its official and full Member.

 

The seminar on Climate Change gave very comprehensive insight to the legislations in China and in the EU

The seminar on Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Efficiency Legislation: China-EU held in Helsinki on Friday 13 December 2013 succeeded to offer very comprehensive insight to the climate and energy legislation both in China and in the EU.

The event was organized  within  the Academy of Finland research project which is led by Professor Ari Ekroos and executed in co-operation with the University of Wuhan, Research Institute of Environmental Law in China.

After the opening of the seminar, with supportive words by the Director of the Finnish Center of Chinese Law and Chinese Legal Culture Professor Ulla Liukkunen, Chinese and European climate law regimes have been introduced by Professor Tianbao Qin from Wuhan University and Professor Ari Ekroos.

Experts from Finland and China have been joined by German, from the Hemholtz Centre for Environmental Research, and Italian, from the University of Sienna, colleagues to discuss renewable energy, Emission Trading Schemes, legislation development on carbon capture and storage, as well as energy efficiency and buildings energy efficiency legislation.

The organisers are thankful to all speakers as well as to the active audience, and welcome them to visit again for more thought-provoking discussions.

Success of the TranSIP workshop in Beijing

The Academy of Finland research project “Legal Transplant For Innovation and Creativity – A Sino-Finnish Comparative Study on the Governance of Intellectual Property Rights” (TranSIP), together with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Institute of Law and the Faculty of Law of Shenzhen University, has held a workshop in Beijing on 22 November 2013.

The two main topics of focus were “Copyright Law and Collective Rights Management” and “IPR Enforcement and Innovation Policy”.

The organizers consider the workshop to be very successful as it brought together over 30 scholars and experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, IPR University Center, University of Helsinki, Hanken School of Economics, Tsinghua University School of Law, Peking University and Shenzhen University School of Law. Also, in the closing speech Professor Niklas Bruun said that the seminar was rewarding, since it gave the opportunity to discussed, from different national perspectives, the very same issues that need to be dealt with in both Finland and China.

The success of the workshop shows the importance of topic and the worth of a further bilateral cooperation. Therefore, the exchange will continue during the second seminar, which will be held in June 2014.

China Law activities receive 100 000 € from Teknologiateollisuuden 100-vuotissäätiö

Teknologiateollisuuden 100-vuotissäätiö has granted in April 2013, 100 000€ of funding for China law research and education at the Faculty of Law, University of Helsinki.

One way the fund will be used is to support the doctoral project “Managing Contractual Risks – Indemnification for third party IPR claims in connection with the commercialization of technology by Finnish technology companies” conducted by Timo Sipi under the supervision of Professor Mika Hemmo.

The dissertation will include China in relation to the potential IPR risks arising from the use of Chinese companies as subcontractors for the technology to be commercialized. In addition, the study includes the study about the possibilities to cover that risk through adequate indemnification clauses negotiated with Chinese companies.

Last Panel Discussion within the China Law Week

The Center extends its warm welcome to our last panel discussion organized within what has been a very successful China Law Week!

The final session will focus on the Finnish business experience in China. The discussion between Mr Antti Herlin (KONE), Mrs Päivi Leiwo (Oilon Oy.) and Mr Joakim Strand (City of Vaasa) will be chaired by Rector Jukka Kola (University of Helsinki).

China Law Week starts today, Tuesday October 8th!

Welcome to our first panel discussion at the Think Corner in Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3, Helsinki) at 16:00!

Today’s panel discussion focuses on the development of Rule of Law in China. The Panel, chaired by the Chancellor Thomas Wilhelmsson, consist of prominent experts: Pekka Hallberg (former President of the Supreme Administrative Court of Finland), Katja Lehto (SAK), Professor Teemu Ruskola (Emory University) and the Deputy Chancellor of Justice Mikko Puumalainen.
